As a leader, setting impossible goals is a really bad strategy. You will bog your people down and make them feel less successful when they are never achieving benchmarks. They will never feel like they are achieving what they should be, and their productivity will go down as a result. When you let your people win, it will become an expectation, not a fluke or attributed to luck.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I love this quote,"Set goals for yourself and your team that are very achievable. Know when you're winning, adjust when you're not, and make winning contagious." Sometimes people set unattainable goals and that is not a good thing because it causes the people on your team to stress out and when you are stressed sometimes you do not perform as well. If you set achievable goals it might help boast your employees moral and also improve their job performance. Make your job fun and not stressful.

Setting goals is great for a company. You want to set goals that are able to be met. Setting goals that are too high can be a discouragement. You need encouragement and this can come from setting goals that can be met, because everyone likes to be recognized.

I think setting easy goals is the best way to motivate people. When people set smalls goals and accomplish them easily, they feel accomplished. It boosts self -esteem and will motivate them to work harder to accomplish bigger and better goals. It’s better to start small with people and then after they get the hang of things, they can move on to bigger and better things.

If you have a team full of winners there should be no problem. Just as the article says if your team always wants to win can't nothing stop them if they put forth the right effort. It is great to set higher standards So that your employees continue to work hard and make the job a complete success for everybody.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
This article made me think about the new teacher evaluation system that's been put into effect and all of the negativity surrounding it. The morale of teachers is at an all time low. More teachers than in any years past retired at the end of last year and the Teacher's Retirement System of Louisiana's personnel told my mom this summer that they expect even more at the end of this school year. All of this is due to the government setting unattainable goals for all except 10 percent of all teachers. It's been stated that only 10 percent will attain the rating of "highly effective" thereby giving the other 90 percent of teachers in the state no hope of being rated as such. Why, then, should they even give their all if they're destined to failure? Because teachers love their children, though, they continue to do their best----even though they know their rating will be "proficient effective" at best. The idea here, though, is that just as the author of this article states that you should NEVER set the bar so high for your employees that they feel the goal is unattainable, neither should the government officials do so for the teachers of our great nation.

People who like to win will work harder to achieve the goals that are set in place. That being said, it is necessary to make sure that the goals in place are obtainable. If you make goals too hard to reach you run the risk of not acheiving them and hurting morale. If goals are continuously unreached employees may become unmotivated, and think that all goals are unreachable or that they are not doing a good job. The goals in place will be achieved if your employees work hard and have a winning attitude, but also must be reachable.

Instant MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I agree with this link because very high goals are very hard to reach. When not reaching those high goals you and your employees can lose some confidence and maybe change things that would have been beneficial to you. Setting low goals will only limit performance as a whole. When setting achievable goals they get accustomed to achieving that they do better and better.

Frank Addante makes great points on setting reachable goals for yourself and your company. I agree with making the goals reachable and feeling great about reaching goals you set for your employees and yourself. Having a positive attitude about achieving goals and spreading that positive attitude throughout the company can help with employee moral and productivity.

I completely agree with Frank's ideas. Setting goals is one thing, but when you set goals that are achievable is a far better idea. Providing your employees with the opportunity to be able to achieve personal or team goals allows them to feel a sense of accomplishment boosting their confidence. Instead of goals that are often times not met which may make someone feel disappointed and less capable. It's all about taking steps one at a time.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I believe it is crucial to a business to set goals that are achievable. Don't set goals too low, but set them high enough that people must do good work in order to achieve them. As a past athlete, I would feel most accomplished when I would work hard and achieve another goal I had set. It motivated me to do even more and achieve more goals. I think it would be the same in business. Workers would be motivated to do more once they have achieved one goal in order to achieve more. It is very important to set achievable goals in business.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I feel there are three types of individuals; over-achievers, those that are content with being average, and the people that simply do not care. Those that have a strong work ethic and want to succeed in what they do are going to work hard and set personal high goals for themselves. If these people are doing everything that they can do and are still not able to surpass the goals that are set, they can begin to feel discouraged. By setting achievable goals, this allows the employees to not only obtain the goals, but allows them to surpass them with even higher personal goals.

Instant MBA: Don’t Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Goals are extremely important in becoming a successful and thriving business. Without goals businesses would not be moving forward and no advancements would be made in terms of technology or any other field. Goals are ways of pushing oneself as well as a group of people at becoming better either individually or as a whole. Setting the proper goal is important because if a goal is set that is too hard to reach the person or group may fail to reach that goal and could lead to the downfall of the company. However, if the goal is too easy then the person or group may find that they have accomplished all their goals and will not have the drive to continue coming up with new ideas. It is important to set goals at a proper level to motivate and challenge while still being reachable.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Goals are very important for every business. However, goals should be attainable. If you are constantly setting goals that are impossible for your employees to reach then they will never be motivated to reach the goals. Instead, they will become frustrated that the company creates these impossible goals for everyone. Instead, a company should set goals that are attainable and then reward employees when they reach the goals. this will make the employees more motivated to reach goals and can I increase productivity within the company.

"Don't set goals that are too hard to reach"
This makes a lot of sense. By setting goals that are too high and employees can't meet them, this can cause them to get discouraged when they don't meet them. This will definitely cause ineffective and inefficient workers. Of course you don't want goals too low either. Like the article says, the employees that can blow past your set goals can empower your other employees. The other employees that are only just able to get past the goals will still feel a sense of accomplishment because they won't have had to kill themselves to be able to get past the goals and will be pleased that they were able to get past them.
