INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I think that the goals that you set for your employees should be ALMOST too hard to reach. There’s a thin line between too hard and hard. Also, as a manager/owner, you must figure out what motivates you employees. I think this is crucial to goal setting and achieving. End the end, if your employees do in fact reach that tough goal, they will feel much much more accomplished than they would have with an easy task or goal.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I actually happen to disagree with this article. Unless you have "winners," as the article mentions, then average goals will only get you average results. But winners are harder to find, and more likely than not, you won't always have winners. So, i think that setting high goals will drive people to reach for them, and that will make them do better. As I see it, it seems like the only way to get the things done that you want, are to show people that they have a lot to work for.

I agree with this. Winners will win or die trying. No need for any special gimmicks or ideas. If you have people who have had success and live for that success, thats all you need.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
The piece of advice offered in this article is awesome!! If you set goals that are beyond the means of your employees or will take a super extended period to get their your staff and probably yourself will lose the momentum. Your staff will think that the goal is unattainable or will take a lifetime to reach it, so therefore they don't put in their best effort, or worse they give up. By creating goals that can actually be accomplished and they staff actually reaching the goals it will excite them and will energize them to want to tackle the next goal.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Setting goals that are way outside of what is able to be accomplished can make employees feel as though they have failed. Setting realistic goals; however, can make employees feel like they are doing a good job. This will boost morale in the company and make the employees feel good about themselves. When employees are happy they want to work harder to help the company reach it's goals.

So many times you hear people set goals that are so far out of reach that they end up changing their goals. By making reachable goals, in a timely manner, you and your partners or employees will stay motivated to complete the goal since they can see it being accomplished. Some companies may set goals that don’t seem out of reach in their eyes but employees may think otherwise. I think all companies and households have learned this lesson the hard way during the past few years in southern Louisiana. Not having a disaster plan is not an option for any business. Having lived and worked through several disasters, (Hurincane Katrina and Gustov, I think we all have disasters plans for work and home. It may have been learned the hard way, but a lesson learned that lasts a lifetime. We have implemented several plans to keep the office open, with and without electricity.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Some business like to set high goals that they can't reach. If you are going to set goals then you should try to set goals that can be reached. Unrealistic goals can sometimes cause stress on your employees and make them feel like failure when the goal isn't met. If you set realistic goals then you employees will be able to meet the goals without being stressed and will probably do better than the set goal. It's good to set goals but you shouldn't set goals that will make your employees feel like they failed the business.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Setting unrealistic or unachievable goals can be the downfall of many companies and their employees. If, instead of setting long-term goals, you set several short term goals for your employees, it can encourage them to reach each and every goal, and motivate them to reach the next one. This way, everything runs a lot smoother and more efficient. An even better motivation is to have a reward after every goal reached for your employees, even if it is something very samll or even just saying "thank you".

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Setting goals is a very important aspect of a business in order to achieve it's long run goal. However if they set a goal for their employees that is not attainable it can lead to the feeling of defeat. It's important to have a team that is driven and feels accomplished in what they are doing. Every time they meet a goal, setting a new higher one can help them to continue to be productive. However on the other end, if you set one huge goal, it can be way to hard and exhausting to constantly be going after the same thing.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
When starting a business you should always have goals set. Goals should be understandable and reachable. Having goals that are calculated beyond your means will result in unnecessary failure. Goals should be set that are reasonable and respectable. Goal setting should reflect the culture and the objective your company is seeking.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I agree that it is important to set attainable goals. If you set one unattainable goal your employees will get discouraged and feel as if they will never succeed as they will never reach this target goal. It is much better to set small attainable goals and one big goal for the future. As your team meets these small attainable goals, they will get excited and it will empower them to move faster and work harder to reach the next goal. In this way you are giving the proper motivation needed to help your team meet the overall larger goal that you have in mind for your business.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Setting unachievable goals is counterproductive to efficiency and morale. Employees realize that the goals are not realistic, and stop working to achieve them. Addante says that the way to work this issue is to hire competitive people who are used to winning and achieving goals, and set realistic goals. I totally agree with this person. If you set realistic goals and you have a winning staff, the employees will blow past the goals, and even push the other employees.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I think this article takes on an interesting approach to goal setting that I think many companies struggle with. A lot of companies set ridiculous goals that are not feasible under any stretch of the imagination. By doing this, employees feel like they have failed. Setting small attainable goals really helps with employee morale.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I must say I only partially agree with article. Yes you should have short attainable goals, however you should reach for the stars with your long term goals. When people accomplish goals they feel like winners, their self esteem and productivity increases. This is great but you also don't want to miss the big picture.
