INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
It is a principle of management that goals have to be not just challenging but also realistic. If a manager sets goals too hard to achieve, the employees might feel stressed, and this can considerably affect their performance. This article makes a good point by stating that employees who are already winners will go beyond expectations; meaning that there is no need to set high goals to make them prove how committed they are with the organization. Furthermore, by setting achievable and challenging goals, employees will feel motivated once they have achieved them, so they will probably remain positive and productive.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I agree with this article 100%. Why set a goal that is unachievable? As the article states, "People who like to win do extremely well and are most competitive when they're feeling positive and focused." If you are setting far-reaching goals for your employees this will only lead to frustration and stress, which in turn may cause them to fail. It would make more sense to set achievable goals and continue to set new goals once those goals are achieved. I believe this will definitely keep these employees and others around them motivated and they will continue to achieve their goals.

Instant MBA: Don’t Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Sometimes leaders tend to set goals that are not within reach for their employees. They do this because they want what’s best for the company, but they fail to understand that setting those types of goals will do nothing but discourage workers. Hiring workers who are already motivated and will accept nothing less than “perfection,” will help avoid setting impossible goals. Also as a leader, differentiating what is far-fetched and reachable shouldn’t be questionable. As a leader of your team, you should know when to deviate from a plan and always have a plan B, just in case things get out of control.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
When you set goals that can't be achieved in a short amount of time, you lose focus and willpower. It will seem exhausting to try and reach big goals without having some middle ground. This is why we set day by day goals and work with that. There are major and big goals in the works, we just focus on the day to day goals that will help the company make steps to the bigger goals.

Alt link 64: INSTANT MBA: Every Business Should Have A Disaster Plan Today's link reminds me of when i was in highschool working at a resturant durring hurrican katrina. Our disaster plan was, like many others in the area, to board up the windows, lock the place down and cook/sell/throw out everything in the fridges and freezers. That was a small resturants disaster plan. In contrast many larger corporations that deal with a lot of information and technology have to have drastically different plans in place.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Everyone loves to win. If you set goals so high that it takes a while to reach them or may never reach them, then you might start getting frustrated because you might feel like you haven't accomplished anything. If you set small achievable goals, you will be able to feel the satisfaction it gives you and it will give you the motivation to go on to the next goal. You may start to get exhausted if you set your goal to high and it takes too long to get there. Set goals that are achievable.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I partially agree with this article. Making goals that are attainable is necessary, but at the same time, if every goal is attainable, the feeling of accomplishment goes away. Everyone needs to be pushed and to remember what it is like to fail. When your employees do fail, it is necessary to reinforce the positive that they have done in order to motivate them to achieve the next goal (or to finish the current goal).

INSTANT MBA: Every Business Should Have A Disaster Plan
I think all companies and households have learned this lesson the hard way during the past few years in southern Louisiana. Not having a disaster plan is not an option for any business. Having lived and worked through several disasters, (Hurincane Katrina and Gustov, I think we all have disasters plans for work and home. It may have been learned the hard way, but a lesson learned that lasts a lifetime. We have implemented several plans to keep the office open, with and without electricity. We have directed customers to other locations that were not damaged during the storm, created paper charts to assist with patient care and incorporated a phone tree to contact staff on when and where to report. It has been tested and improved as we encounter different disasters. So a disaster plan in not an option in the business world, but a necessity to survive in one.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
I really like this article and wish that more managers felt this way. I've worked for some managers that set the most outrageous work goals and it doesn't set very well with the employees. We would work as hard and as fast as we could it they would still get mad because not everything got finished on time. When things did get finished on time, there weren't any congratulations or thank yous given to us at all. The company I work for now sets very achievable goals and it drives all of us to meet those goals and even go beyond.

INSTANT MBA: Stop Spending All Your Time On Your Customers I think this article makes a great point. So many times you hear people set goals that are so far out of reach that they end up changing their goals. By making reachable goals, in a timely manner, you and your partners or employees will stay motivated to complete the goal since they can see it being accomplished. Some companies may set goals that don’t seem out of reach in their eyes but employees may think otherwise. This would unmotivated employees because they may think the company is asking too much by setting a nearly impossible goal.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
Setting unrealistic goals can be a negative influence on your motivation for success. Unrealistic goals that will not be reached make it easier for the person setting them to accept failure. Unrealistic goals do nothing except track wishful thinking. In business, there are so many goals that need attention it is necessary to pay attention to only those that are important to pushing the business forward in the right direction. There is no point in wasting time on unrealistic goals. Instead it is better to create realistic goals which can be successfully completed.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
If you set goals that are unattainable, people stop trying to reach them. Someone naturally only wants to work towards a goal that they can actually achieve. If you set an impossible goal it will make a person feel inadequate and they will be less productive. On the other hand, if you set many reachable goals, you will boost morale and improve productivity. When people accomplish goals they feel like winners, their self esteem increases, and their productivity sky rockets. As a business leader, it makes much more sense to set obtainable goals, opposed to those no one will ever reach.

Setting achievable goals is something that I think few companies do. I do however think that it is very important to set goals that can be achieved. This helps boast your employees moral and improves job performance in my opinion. It is good to set big goals but then you should break that down into smaller goals that can be achieved one step at a time. I know that my supervisor at work does this and it helps the team feel as if we are getting things accomplished and drives us to work harder so that we can finish the project and achieve the big goal of the company.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Set Goals That Are Too Hard To Reach
In order for an individual or team to feel successful and remain motivated, it is important to set attainable goals. I currently support a process in my work for executing improvement ideas where we use a tool capture ideas and then sort them by what the team has the ability to do as well as impact and ability to meet the deadline. This tool is designed to help the team meet goals and feel successful so they can then continue with that success and tackle larger opportunities. I have used this process with several teams with great success.
