Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
Being different is essential for competitive advantage. Sometimes it's hard to be different, especially in this economy that's why it's important to do what others aren't. I realize that this video is kind of old because e-commerce type businesses are more common than ever. Still just because it's common doesn't mean it should be passed on. It is important to keep up with the competition but at the same time, always keep on the lookout for ways to escape the sea of sameness.

The video explains how companies spend so much time trying to gain a competitive advantage that they're all doing the same thing. Instead of following the trends, companies should implement different strategies and plan ahead. For example, Walmart and Target. They have different brands but, are similar in so many ways. The important thing is to plan ahead and be unique.

Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
Peters talked about the 'sea of sameness' as the phenomenon of companies working so hard to mimic their competition that, in general, companies have begun to lose what makes them stand out. I can see how this could be true. Companies like Apple and Samsung compete so much that their operating systems are starting to look like they come from the same family. And as Peters suggested, today it is hard to distinguish between a Honda, Hyuandai, Toyota, or Chevy. In addition the use of the Internet and e-commerce has also caused a sameness in products and companies. People aren't even shopping for a brand anymore. They are using social media sites to find products they like, and then searching the Internet for the cheapest version of that product. Sites like Amazon and Etsy make this possible and way too easy.

Companies need to reach out and make an effort to differentiate themselves from other companies in the same market and also advertise themselves using these differences in quality.Being different is essential for competitive advantage. Sometimes it's hard to be different, especially in this economy that's why it's important to do what others aren't. One main thing this video focuses on is the importance of e-commerce. I realize that this video is kind of old because e-commerce type businesses are more common than ever. Still just because it's common doesn't mean it should be passed on.

The sea of sameness, o where to begin. There are a lot of businesses that copy each others strategies because they work and what happens to businesses is that they become very similar and picking one that is better than the other is like splitting hairs. He brings up the car industry, a honda accord to be more specific, and during the course of him presenting the idea, I went off on a tangent thought process. Every single car that is out there looks the same. My dad drives a jaguar and he hates the new model of his car that he loved since childhood. He says that they don't even look like the same car anymore because the new models look exactly like any other car out on the market right now. So the sea of sameness is real and I do recognize more of that as I think about it. He doesn't really tell us how to get out of the sea so, in that regard I dislike this video.

TITLE - Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
Although I think the speaker had an important message to deliver, I think he went about it in the most boring way ever! I agree that too many businesses, products or services are too similar. Competitors are becoming more and more alike which is not appealing to consumers. Today, I think it is very difficult to stay out of the sea of sameness but it is crucial to be in a particular niche when trying to be different in the business world. Companies spend so much time trying to be different that they fall behind on the new technological advances and lose focus on what consumers really want.

Sometimes the hardest thing in life is not not jump on the bandwagon of sameness. It can sometimes be scary to be different and to stand out. However, it is important to find a way to be different. Being different from the rest gives you an advantage that your competitors will not have. With some many companies offering the same thing, each company has to find there own way to stand out. I did find this video was a little long, but it did get a good point across.

Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
A lot of people are caught in the sea of sameness. Because of competition, products are now similar. It is important for business to recognize if their product is being the same, and have something in their product to stand out. If you innovated something different, that is ground breaking and that people have the need to use it, then you will have a successful product. It is good to watch what your competition is doing but at the same time you need to set yourself a part.

The video makes us as the consumer ask the question "How much different are the products that companies today try to sell us?" When you really think about it, there is a big sea of sameness. What's the big difference between frutie o cereal versus fruit loops other than the name brand and the sticker price. They both are circular round fruit flavored cereal. What really hit home is the statement from the CEO of HP when she said they advertise new products 3 times a day but consumers don't remember any of those products.

TITLE - Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
If you are trying to start a business or distinguish yourself from your competitors, I think this a great video to watch. It is mind blowing when you think about how many companies are the same, how many products are the same, and how many ideas are the same. What sets these successes apart is what they can do to make themselves uniquely different or able to be remembered.

I think most people find it so hard to be totally unique from others because they initially get ideas from things they already know and don't know how to think critically enough to expound on these ideas. It is way to easy to get comfortable in taking little effort and joining the competition with the same and similar products. We have to challenge ourselves to make more of what is already out there, or come up with something to totally replace what is already out there. A tablet is so much more than the outdated IBM desktop computer from the 90's.

This video was about how many companies offer the same products and services. Dealing within the same industry can cause some ideas to be easily copied and used at another company. You have to stand out.

82 TITLE - Tom Peters: TRAPPED! How To Escape the Sameness Trap
Everyone wants the next big thing. You don’t want to just manufacture an item that someone else has already made. You need to come up with a product that is different or at least superior to a product of a competitor. If you make the same product than you are just hoping more on being able to market the product better than the competition. Make something new and you will do better in my opinion.

I would definitely share this link with friends and colleagues. Thank you Dr.Wyld. I think the main message that you get from this video is that no matter what business you are in you have to basically reinvent the wheel. Cannot let monotony rule your business and become stagnant. When you do it can consume your business
