Having elegant leadership in a business is a good quality to have. In some situations, simplicity is best. As May said, try starting off with doing one thing that your employees would like you stop doing and then doing something that your competitors would hate for you to stop doing. Take the complicated things out and add things that will make your life and the life of other easier.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means A successful company has to remain focus on its goals and strategy to survive in the long run. I believe that in most cases, making a business simpler translates into a more efficient operation. When employees and customers understand what the company is all about clearly, it is more likely that employees are aligned with the goals of the organization and customers are willing to do business with the firm. In general, when all stakeholders perceive the organization to be well structured, their relationship with the company will be smoother.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
This article reminded me of the old saying "Don't bite off more than you can chew." My mom preaches that one sometimes. It's basically saying don't take on more than you can handle. This rule should apply to business owners as well. We can all remember reading/hearing about corporations that went under soon after mergers and/or rapid expansions. They probably didn't stop to think that using elegance was the way to achieve the maximum impact, as the author states in his article. McDonald's seems to follow this philosophy as well since they've never opted to offer hot dogs and/or pizza/Mexican food as some chains seem to have started to do. Yet, McD's is still number one with its traditional menu (with a few new items added every so often and others introduced on seasonally.) Yes, the philosophy of keeping it simple might be the way to go in the business world, as well, if corporations want to ensure that their business is a success.

The article uses Google as an example. Google is genius in the way that it presents itself. "There's a box; there's a lot of white space' you enter a term and search for it." It is as simple as that. Steve Jobs once said that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. He believed that customers wanted something that was so ahead as far as technology, yet simple in design. This is why he obsessed with the iPod being 3 clicks away from it being off to playing the song that you wanted. The article goes onto say that you should "subtract anything that complicates an organization". The same ideas are brought here, whether it is a product or the business itself.

I like the subject matter of this article. I think one of the main things that hinders businesses is that they try and think about too much at one time. They get too far ahead of themselves and tend to overcomplicate more then they are aware. It is important to simplify as much as possible. This way the goal is clear and the path or means of achieving it are just as clear. I liked the comment, "What would my employees like for me to stop doing and what would my competitors hate for me to stop doing." I think it is a unique way to look at your company in a different perspective that will help in the long run.

I agree with the meaning of this link, which is not to be too complicated when running an organization. If an organization gets to complicated it may move slower and productivity may be reduced. This can hurt the company’s overall performance and it can fall behind competitively. You should consider your employees and your competitors, meaning that pay attention to what they both don’t want you to do. If you please your employees your company will be productive. If you are doing that that your competitors don’t what you to do than they may get distracted and your company will be better.

I like how this article uses the example of Google's home page. The page isn't distracting. It's simple and clear on how to use. Having so much clutter makes things complicated and harder to focus on. Sometimes you just need something simple to get the point across. Adding unnecessary things can hurt the point you are trying to get across.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
This article talks about using elegance to achieve maximum impact with minimum means. You sometimes don't have the means but your personality and how you act can bring a lot to the table. You get to be elegant and have respect for people and show respect. This will go a long way for you if you can make people like you and give them respect.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
In the era of competition, it is important for any company to cut down cost. The best way of cutting down cost is being more efficient. We should try to make most out of least. Change is important for any company, and as the time goes on, it is important for any company to minimize the unnecessary processes and task so everything can flow more efficiently give us most bang for the buck.

I have always liked the saying "less is more". This is a saying that is appropriate for many situations including business. Business can be complicated enough and if you keep adding things and focusing on things that do not matter then your business will not be as successful as it could be. Instead, managers need to focus on the key things that are important for their business. If there is anything that can be taken away or stopped then the manager should try to do that so that the business stays simple and successful.

Elegance takes skill. Not everyone has the capability to be elegant. However, the principle of subtraction can be easily applied by anyone. This is a good idea to simply operations while increasing efficiency. I will definitely be interested in reading the book “The Laws of Subtraction.” It seems as if Matthew May has interesting insights that can be easily applied by managers and help them be more effective in their positions.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
Most small businesses are efficient because they are small and use simple means to get things done. But some of them are not because they have so many steps to do one thing, it makes them complicated just like a bigger business would be. If a business has to go through so much red tape in order to get things done, then they need to sit down and think of ways that the process can be simplified so that it is not so difficult to get projects done.

I agree completely, the business does not have to be overly strict or controlled. There can be some instances with a little leisure time or more spontaneous work activities just to keep the upbeat of the organization and the workers entertained because sometimes people can become stressed over time from doing the same old thing everyday.

As a leader, having a simple structure is a way to make sure you don't get too bogged down. Ask yourself the simple questions and try to see yourself from the employee's eyes or the competitor's eyes. A simple structure allows a company to be "light on their feet," easily able to adapt to change and when issues arise, quickly change their game plan to overcome the issues. As the article says, smaller companies have the right idea, thinking simply, and in turn they are agile and resourceful and have a clear focus of where they are and where they want to be.

I like this article because it focuses on being efficient. That's the best way to increase your profits. I agree that may people prefer quality over quantity. I believe that the quantity of the quality is also very important. The more quality that you have the better that it is.
