Sometimes the simple answer is the best answer. You don't have to go 100 mph to get somewhere fast, if you take the right route it will get you there fast enough. Simplicity can be your best friend as a business owner. It makes your employees happy and will drive your competitors crazy. I think this article is absolutely genius. The google home page is a very good example of elegance and simplicity. They don't need a whole lot of ads or designs or quirks or anything like that. They have a bar, which is functional, and that is it. Leaders could definitely take a page from that book. Also, the two questions comment is a good idea as well. There is always something that employees want there managers to stop doing, and there are always things you wish your competition would stop doing.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
The fact that smaller businesses tend to be more elegant is probably true. I feel the reason for this is focus. Larger companies lose their focus on what made the business what it is today. They tend to focus more on how to make more money. While making more money does make a more successful business, it can also make you lose focus and become greedy. When this begins to happen, people start to notice and your business may start declining.

I really like this idea. It is funny how modern society has shifted towards a companies scale being what is important. I think business success happens when you get retain maximum revenue while maintain minimal overhead. The google example is great. The best search engine in the world could have complicated their process, but it works for them. People have grown to love it. Simple = Smart.

Alt link 80: INSTANT MBA: Don't Focus Everything On Aggression And Competition
Harthorne has a good idea, but how often do people create new things that are a benifit to society? I agree that you can't focus on competition, but not every person will be a break-out success so they have no choice but to chase the same resources that eveyone else is chasing.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
I believe my organization, Raising Canes, has used less to create more. The company started off very small, and grew very slowly over the first few years. This allowed the company to get everything down to a science before expanding. The kept the goals and structure simple, allowing them to achieve maximum impact with minimum means. By starting off slowly, the company was able to do much more and insure longtime success, rather than high, short-term success.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
Sometimes less is more when it comes to business. Like the example in the article, Google is very easy to use without having too much on the home page. Yahoo works the same as Google yet Yahoo has a lot of attractions on their home page. Some business people like to believe less is more. If you think your company can get rid of a few workers to make things easier then don't be scared to let workers go. You don't need ten workers to for a five person job. Letting go of unnecessary things in a business can help the business grow.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
Being a supply chain management major, I can totally relate to this article. The K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) method is constantly brought up. That’s basically the whole purpose of my career; take complex things, break them down, map them out, and then make them as simple as possible to understand. While this article has a great point, unfortunately many business have quite complex and confusing ways of processing. In a way, I’m happy because it makes my knowledge that much more valuable. On the other hand, it’s sad that so many companies get out of hand.

This article is phenomenal! A great example of a business that has taken simplicity to another level is Raising Canes, I have never worked for the company so I don't know the inside ways, but as a customer, I think that having a simple menu with minimum choices is genus! Just from visiting, I can tell that they want to keep things simple for their customers, all while having a fun work environment, and AMAZING customer service. This is a simple way to do business, and they are very successful. Keeping it simple is how people like it!

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
In this article elegance is synonymous with simplicity. The article suggests that creating a very structured organization sometimes hinders the performance of the business. It leaves no room for innovation, creativity, or growth. Sometimes is better for the organization to cut back. Use less people and empower them with more responsibility. Go for the more simple means, cut back on anything that requires energy to be unnecessarily wasted.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means Achieving maximum impact with minimum means is a very effective and efficient way of operating an organization. When you add too many layers and too much excess to an organization, it will become difficult to move ideas forward. This will also add steps and layers to the process that do not add value. It is always very important to evaluate your organization against customer and stakeholder needs. If you have steps in the process that are not of value to customers or stakeholders, you may want to see if these steps can be removed. INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means I totally agree with you!! Too many steps complicates the process and could cost the company more in the long run. I think some managers can over think things at time, instead of stepping back to see if this process really adding value to the company. It is important to listen to the people who are actually doing the work to get their take on ways to minimize means.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
Elegance, or simplicity, in a company's principles and products can sometimes lead to much better outcomes for the company. The article uses the example of Google having a plain white screen with a simple search box. Although its simple, and maybe considered boring by some, it gets the job done without wordy advertisements or tacky decorations, and because of it's elegance, is one of the most successful companies in the world. Small businesses that don't have much structure or personnel, can sometimes end up being more successful than bigger companies with a lot of organization and structure, simply because there is less going on, and less confusion, which ultimately means smoother sailing for certain types of companies.

INSTANT MBA: Use Elegance To Achieve Maximum Impact With Minimum Means
In state government, there are many places to “subtract.” Our department is often faced with the challenge to do more with less, recently in terms of personnel due to hiring freezes. However I have witnessed agencies become more efficient as the employees have learned to adapt. I have also seen sections lose their way, because the employees close to retirement don’t have the energy anymore to take on more duties. So these employees retire early, and the section is forced to hire new people that have no experience with the department. This causes lots of long days, and sometimes, nights, when employees create problems because of improper training.

A lot of business owners worry about how the company will become successful. Worrying can cause stress and actually lead to your business failing rather than succeeding. Do not let the little things worry you. Instead leave business at work and do not bring it home with you. It can cause trouble in your family environment and as well in your work environment. Worrying has never fixed a problem; instead it can make it worse.
