INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Our principal is doing just this right now........embracing the mess of the new teacher evaluation system. The morale could be at an all time low at this point in time. Teachers are unsure as to how they will be rated, even when they put their all into their jobs. Most spend countless hours after school planning, preparing, grading papers, conferencing with parents, and entering grades only to go home and spend hours more doing the same thing. I've learned in the short period of time I've been in the profession that teachers truly have no life. The general public doesn't realize this, though, and feel that teachers should be held up to an entirely different set of standards than those in any other profession. We're judged on how well our students score on a test when, in all reality, we can only do so much with little minds in a 7 hour day. We can't go home with them and make sure they study/do their homework. We can't make sure their parents help them. So, yes, our principal does have a mess on her hands, as all others do at this point. However, she helps us to embrace it (as it's not going away any time soon) and tries to keep our spirits up by making us aware that in her book, we are number one.

I think that as a manager, you will never know what exactly is going to happen next. It is important to use your discretion and make decisions to the best of your ability. You will not always have experience in particular situations, but in the ones that you are familiar with you will be able to delegate tasks accordingly to provide the best outcome. Likewise in the situations that you are not familiar be ready to make the best decisions you can with the knowledge you have.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
This article says that you shouldnt have confusion, clutter, and a mess all the time, but sometimes it is best just to embrace the mess. No matter how structured and prepared your business can be, there are always times when uncertainty is present. As an entrepreneur, you are going to be faced with challenges and you are going to feel overwhelmed. You need to be able to maintain your focus and keep everyone, including yourself moving forward towards the overall goal of what you are trying to achieve.

I can relate this to at times. There are times I can be unsure of what to do, say for instance for a project, and the only way to progress is if I just keep working. When you're stuck in a mess, things will get better. It is important to just keep working and stay focused until you get out of it.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Business world is unpredictable. You cannot have a plan B for all the problems that comes in your path. Some problems can be solved with little effort and some are really tough. When an expected problem arises, the best way to approach it would be slowly and one at a time. Trying to fix everything at once may not work. So it is important to keep everyone focused and solve the problem calmly and rationally.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Sometimes a boss or manager can do everything right within a company, however, something will still go wrong. This is because there is no way to know everything and make everything go absolutely right. Therefore, it is important for managers to understand this and make sure that they just keep moving forward. They need to make sure that they just continue working to try to solve the problem. Business need to more forward constantly. There is no time for them to stop and worry about things that are not going just right.

Sometimes the best way for a leader to cope with adversity within their company is to just roll with the punches. Everyone should know that from time to time there will be roadblocks along the way so your success will be determined based on how you deal with them. In my opinion the best leaders are those who handle adversity the best. How you handle a company or team under duress can go a long way.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Once people realize life is a mess then they will begin to be productive. I always thought everything should run perfectly. I thought if you planned well and executed a plan then things should run perfectly. Yet, life is not perfect. No matter the planning that goes into a business, project, etc, nothing runs smoothly every time. Accepting that fact and keeping a positive attitude and just doing what needs to be done will keep the team on track. Besides, life is not fun if everything runs perfectly, there would be no crazy stories to talk about—right?

Instant MBA: Go Ahead and Embrace the Mess
I do think that it is okay to embrace the mess sometimes. Doing so gives you time to create a plan to get through the mess and eventually you are able to sort through it. Sometimes it is best when you have a mess to tackle it a little at a time; if you do this eventually you don't even have to have a plan. The mess just gets cleaned up and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

In business, nothing is every going to just be laid out for them to say, "This is exactly what will happen in the next year." Businesses must expect the unexpected and have plans for if and when things go better or worse than they expected. When thrown something they know how to handle, managers should be able to get through it with their teams and a timely and efficient manner. For the tougher issues, there should be an efficient plan instead of just throwing people in to work on it without really know what they're getting themselves into. Forecasting and predicting can ease the surprise factor but, companies should always have plans for possible outcomes.
