As the article states, life isn't predictable, no matter how prepared you may be. Every business encounters some type of obstacles. Managers should not panic when things get messy, because if the managers are panicking of course the employees will panic. Yes, you and your employees will become overwhelmed at times, but as a manager you should embrace these obstacle and find a way to overcome them quickly and effectively.Business is just that, Business. I understand how hard it can be to let go of the reigns when it was your blood, sweat, and tears that brought your company to where it is. Look at it from a different angle. Say "I DID IT! All my hard work finally paid off and I'm so successful I cant do it on my own anymore!" It would be a shame for all that hard work to go to waste because you were too proud to let others in.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess
I guess embracing the mess is kind of like a rough draft to a paper. You have to sort through ideas and concepts until you come up with something that will work. Maybe then things will start to come together to form the bigger picture. Once you have established a game plan or direction the mess is headed, it all starts to come together and form something you can work with. Everything can't always begin with clarity. Sometimes a little digging is required to reach the goal set before you.

I absolutely agree with this article. There will be times where there just isn't an answer to the question or a solution for the problem. You need to be prepared for that. Trust that you have assembled a good team that can thrive in the face of adversity and hang on for the ride.

Alt link 78: INSTANT MBA: If You Take Your Business Too Personally, It May Be Hard To Expand
The Blue Man Group is cool. I've never got to see there live show but have always wanted to. It probably was hard for the guy who was the blue man to move on and allow others to be in that role. This is kind of like when a company grows sussesful and becomes a franchise, the original owner sees the company as something theyve built themselves and now is handing the name to another.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Throughout my time as a manager, I feel as though I have learned to embrace the mess. It is a common joke at Raising Canes that disasters always occur on my shifts. For example, certain unpredictable happenings do not occur often but I have experienced them all, such as, the headsets for drive-thru going out, the credit card machines going down, the power going out, and even dealing with crazy out-of-control customers. Rather than letting these things cause a store-wide freakout and diminish productivity, I have learned to embrace the mess. Whenever one of these disasters occurs, I just laugh and blame it on my bad luck, and then everyone moves on to deal with the problem.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
Every business has times where work is hectic. It's okay for things to not run smoothly all the time. If things start to fall off track then, as a leader, you should try to work with the hard work as much as possible. Not every business can have a back up plan for everything that goes wrong because so many unexpected things can go wrong that business owners can't plan for. If things start to go wrong then just try to fix it as soon as possible.

Sutton has a great point. Although, as the boss, you may not know exactly the right direction is for a particular project, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep pushing your team forward. The most important thing is to keep moving forward and eventually there will be a breakthrough. Also, by doing it this way, you may find something that you would’ve otherwise overlooked.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
One great quality of a good manager is being able to embrace the mess, and showing your team how to as well. When there becomes a time of uncertainty, or a time where everything is in mad chaos, it can be very overwhelming, but it is important as a manager or leader to show your team that there is a way out and everything will be ok. As long as the leader or the boss shows confidence during a "messy" time, employees will follow suit and continue to do their best until the storm passes.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
You do not have to know everything, or be able to solve every problem in order to be a good leader. In all reality, a good leader usually does not know everything, but they know what to do and who to ask when facing a difficult situation. They know their employees well enough to know who can handle what tasks, and how to get everyone on board. Problems within a company can really bring out the best qualities in a good leader, and the worst qualities in a bad one.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And “Embrace The Mess”
When there is a challenge posed to us in my office, I often think, “We can sit here and complain about the problem, or we can get started working on a solution.” I’m not sure where this phrase came from, but it is my version of “embracing the mess.” Although we try to initiate a process for everything that occurs in state government, messes happen all the time. We try our best to clean it up and learn from the experience, but that is not always an option.

Sometimes you have to have to prepare for the unpredictable or make the best decisions when things go wrong. As a leader you need to set the stage for your employees when this occurs. You must remain calm and try to do the next right thing.

INSTANT MBA: Go Ahead And "Embrace The Mess"
There will be times in business where everything is not going as planned and there is a mess, but instead of avoiding it, it is best to embrace it. You can embrace it by trying to fix the problem. Just develop a plan and put the right people in place to execute it and move on. Do not focus to much on how you failed focus on how to make it better.

Business can get messy. Embrace it and show it who is boss. Bob Sutton made a valid point, “Reducing complexities and introducing predicable measures into the workplace can increase employee productivity and eventually save money, especially during challenging times.” Let your problems and difficulties as a business owner be a time for learning and experimenting for the company. It is your time to figure out what will work and what is not going to work. A successful company does not just happen overnight. It takes time and patience.
