Students, Please view and comment on this link of the day - yes, for your education, but also for the points, of course! Watch the video below: TITLE - The way we're working isn't working: Tony Schwartz at TEDxMidwestThen, post a comment in reply to this discussion thread. Again, what to post? Here are some ideas: + What did you take away from the video? + How does the video relate in some way to your past experience (work, as a consumer, family, school, etc.)? + How might you use these ideas in your own career? Good luck! David

TITLE - The way we're working isn't working: Tony Schwartz at TEDxMidwest
I really enjoyed this video! In fact, it could not have come at a more perfect time in my life when I really needed to hear this message. Mr. Schwartz points out that to be more successful in life work better and smarter is in important to focus on the four types of energy we as humans use to work: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. The way to make sure one is using these energies to the best of one's ability is to embrace balance. The human body and mind is designed to work in an up and down state, it is designed to pulse between high and low, it needs to exert energy and then relax. We should also realize our weaknesses and balance them with our strengths. We should use the whole brain, both left and right, when making decisions and look for a deep sense of purpose in our everyday lives. Taking care of ourselves first, working on what we can accomplish, understanding our own weaknesses, and unleashing the strength of our minds are all important in maintaining the health of our whole self and working smart.

The way we're working isn't working: Tony Schwartz at TEDxMidwest
I enjoyed this video a lot. Schwartz thoroughly points out the four types of energy we as humans use to work: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. Taking care of ourselves first, working on what we can accomplish, understanding our own weaknesses, and unleashing the strength of our minds are all important in maintaining the health of our whole self and working smart. I agree with the 4 types of energy because it is so true.

To be more successful, as Mr. Schwartz puts it, you have to focus on four types of energy: emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical. We need to take care of ourselves first making sure we understand that we may not be able to make everything happen right away. So we focus on what we can accomplish and knowing our weakness and in what areas they are important to know. Making sure you use the strengths that you have to help make things happen and to maintain your whole self health and working smart in all that you do.

The way we're working isn't working: Tony Schwartz at TEDxMidwest
I really enjoyed watching this video! Even though it was a bit long, I plan on re-watching it to make notes as a reminder on how to be more efficient and how to work "better". Schwartz said in the beginning that demand in life is outweighing capacity, and as life continues demand will not become any lighter. Instead of investing time that is finite, we should learn how to invest and use out energy more efficiently. This made sense to me because I often times find myself at work investing energy in tasks that should not be in the line up on my daily tasks. If we focus and use our energy (and time will follow suite) more efficiently, we will be better workers.

The way we're working isn't working: Tony Schwartz at TEDxMidwest I love all the Ted videos. Schwartz talks about the way that we are working in a way that cannot work. We spend more time wasting energy than renewing it. We also miscalculate the confidence and humility that we express. We have to equally embrace all of the positives and negatives in order to push ourselves to learn more.

This is a great video that is very relevant today. Our society has become very demanding and has lost sight of our core needs. Tony’s description of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energy is well connected with our society. Like individuals, businesses, need to be able to renew energy and create sustainability. Businesses tend to get focused on the short-term and with that focus demands will only increase and in many cases sustainability decreases. This is a great message for businesses to understand and use to help improve their long-term success.

I would definitely share this link with friends and colleagues. Thank you Professor! I think that it was a great video with some really valuable information. I do think the video was way too long...Information overload. Needed to break it down into a couple of videos because I had to rewind quite frequently in order to keep up with all the terminology the speaker was using. I totally feel that all the information has a purpose and makes sense for everything we do center around attitude. Being around people with the wrong attitude really makes life difficult all around.

I support Tony Schwartz's ways of thinking. Managing your energy is the best way to produce qualitative results when applying yourself to any project. Time, on an individual basis, is finite to how long people live (throughout a person's life they will always have the same twenty-four hour days to work with). In modern days, there are so many platforms to work through and work with that time efficiency is less of a big deal. Technology is a good example of this as it enables us to do more with less generally. Energy, is representative to people's working inputs- it’s the “why”, “where”, and “how” of doing things. Time efficiency only ever represented the "when". The greater the extent and degrees of input put into a project, the greater that project will be.

While this video was a little long, I found it interesting. In order for us to be more successful, we need to focus on the four types of energy. We need to take care of ourselves first and make sure that we understand that we may not be able to make everything happen at this point in time. We need to focus on what we can accomplish, know what our weaknesses are, and know what areas are important.

Good video. We do require so much more energy to get things done now than before. Mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual energy. Like he said in the video, we do tend to chase technology. I thought it was a good point, comparing us to computers. We try to do so many things at one time.

The video had some wonderful keys values to life in it. I found the opposites the most intriguing part of the video. The video said that you can't help others without helping yourself. It means that if you don't take great care of yourself, then you can't expect to take good care of others. You need to balance both. I think this is a great point because you often want to do whatever you can to take care of other people even if it affects you in some way.

When I first started watching this video I thought "great 18 minutes long" but it turned out to be a great video. The video points out the key values of life and it makes some really good points. I liked how he pointed out that were like computers, tying to do so many things at once because it is so true. Unfortunately were not able to do several things at once like we would like to but it is important that we take care of ourselves and don't push too hard.

This is interesting because it's addressing our ability to be able to handle responsibilities at an accelerated pace. The way he describes it is a new type of energy crisis, one we find within ourselves. I completely agree that we all need to be more aware of our use of personal energy and learn to better utilize it. I think we have to find a healthy medium between spending and renewing our energy just as we are designed to and just opposite of what we have been trained to do. Reality is that our quality of service or contribution will be severely hindered if we don't.
