Being a position leader is not an easy leader to fill because their usually authoritative and strict in a way because of their position. People in a position with a lot of authority that are strict are not respected. They are not respected because of they way they position their power and tell people how to do things because they say so. Someone with this mindset will not spark any creativity, inspiration or motivation because one can not think when someone else is thinking for you. This article could help one to be a leader by example and not by position, because you will gain more respect from your employees and company.

Leadership is one of the important qualities that a good leader must possess. Leadership is the way leader influences their employees. It is not just giving orders and making them follow what you say. There has to be a mutual relationship between leader and the employees in order for the relationship to last long. Being a positional leader and imposing authority on employees won't create a sound relationship in the company and will eventually hurt the company.

Maxwell hits the nail on the head with this article. Becoming a great leader is more than just telling others what to do because you said so. Being a great leader is being inspirational, being supportive, being aware, being there, and most of all understanding others and how they should be treated to accomplish the goals of the company.

Maxwell informs the readers that being a "positional leader" does not motivate employees to work hard. A leaders job is to actually lead employees towards a goal that they themselves wish to reach. Being a positional leader just makes the employees do what they are told simply because they are told. Even if someone has reached a point where they are considered simply a positional leader, this status can be changed through dedicated efforts. I have three positional leaders and absolutely hate working for them. I will never want to be considered a positional leader simply because I want to be successful.

John C. Maxwell say being a Positional leader will hurt your company. He follow that by saying "Whenever people use their position to lead others for a long time and fail to develop genuine influence, they become branded as positional leaders, and they rarely get further opportunities for advancement in that organization." I agree with MR. Maxwell

Leaders are people we look up to. If the leaders don't have reasons for why they do certain things and just do it because they have the power to, then that's not someone to look up to. I love that the article mentioned the word genuine. We should all be genuine with everything we do. I loom up to our general manager and I want to be just like her. She does every aspect of her job with sincerity and is very genuine. In the end, if the leader is a positional leader, the employees will not be motivated and eventually it will show in their performance which does hurt the company.

The "positional leader" is never effective in leading others. This is a concept from years past that has become obsolete. Those who attempt to follow this principle will be utter failures in the working conditions of the 21st century. Employees are more than pawns which are to be told "what to do," and they will not allow themselves to be treated as such. Engaging leaders who respect employees and encourage involvement are much more effective. Those who follow Maxwell's leadership principles will be greatly respected and ultimately reach the success they strive for.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company I work for many businesses who leader are in a that positional leader stage who believe in you do what they say, When you find business leader with that attitude you find that employees are not as will to work as hard or happy about coming to work everyday. Find the leader who you can go to for that extra push and the organiation happy you get to that next level and not just working to have that glass ceiling over your head.

Being a leader over a group of people no matter how big or small is more about leading them in the right direction and less about just being bossy. A leader is a more than a job, it's a responsibility, the ones being led must rely on the leader for direction and organization all the while helping them grow as an employee of the company. A positional leader will keep the department or organization at a plateau, giving what is necessary to keep afloat but no more than what is required. A good leader will continuously be on an upward slope, building a stronger, goal driven set of employees.

Being a positional leader is not the most effective role. Using your role as a leader just to simply exert authority is an example of positional leadership. Just because someone is in a leadership role, such as your boss, CEO, supervisor, etc., doesn't mean that person is a necessarily good leader. Positional leaders set the tone for the relationship between themselves and their employees. A good manager should lead by example and be considered a leader based upon their performance as a manager and team player. A person should not be considered a leader based on their position on the "ladder".

I know that I personally have worked for and known a lot of "because I said so" types of bosses, and nearly almost every boss was not really respected by the employees. Most people respect a boss who is willing to work along side them to help them achieve the overall goals of the company. However, some bosses can be the type who push the work on everyone else and play golf every day, so it can be hard to have respect for them.

The article is completely correct. A good leader can inspire people to do great things because they want to be better or do better. A positional leader is usually tuned out after some point and people just don't usually enjoy working for people with a "bossy" attitude. The best way to ensure success in leadership is to make people enjoy working and want to take pride in what they do. A good leader can actually survive in businesses they do not fully understand where a positional leader is often setting themselves up for failure regardless of their own knowledge of the job.

I agree with this idea about not being a positional leader. If you are leading people
based off your position and nothing else you have a problem. Just because you are
their “boss” doesn’t mean you need to act like one. If you are not influencing them
to get better then they are not going to succeed or want to continue to work for you.
Treat them as if they are working with you and not for you. Obviously you a good
worker or you would not have been given a leadership role. Be a leader but make
sure you are leading them into the battle and not directing them from the rear.

This article talks about being a positional leader and how this can hurt your company. If you use your authority to just force people to do stuff then they are not going to want to follow you. A good leader motivates their team and asks them to do stuff and makes them see the benefit in actually doing the task. Not all tasks are going to be fun and likable but a good leader is easier to follow and easier to work with. Much more so then someone forcing or telling you what to do.

This is because it does nothing for the employee/employer relationship--doesn't inspire confidence, trust, or respect. In order to foster the development of your team, a leader who had once relied on his position for his authority can always change, but it is hard work. I definitely agree with this advice, it takes more than a "royal appointment" to make a leader. An employee should know that his work is contributing directly to the company's success and that someone appreciates him. Without these connections employees become apathetic, which is never in the best interest of the firm.
