INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company Being a leader is more than barking orders to people who you view below yourself. A leader should give advice and tips to employees to help make work better and more efficient. Also a leader should be one to communicate efficiently with employees and be a role model. Leading involves being connected to your followers and helping them better a situation no matter what it is. Someone wants to feel connected and able to talk to a leader, and its up to the leaders to show the employees that they are hear to listen as well as to give orders in a professional way.

Potential leaders can help a company. If you start from the bottom and work yourself up you can help the company have success. Leaders are not a bad thing, but having too many can hurt the company. Managers must be able to evaluate employees and promote employees where needed, so there is no breakdown in the company.

INSTANT MBA: Relationships Are Everything
When we are talking about relationships within the comapny, I think that having trust and reliability are two of the most important aspects. Once you have an employee that you can trust without a doubt, is always reliable, and has your best interest at hand, you should hold on to that person at all costs. These types of individuals are hard to find. If you've got them, you should do what it takes to hold on to them.

I think there is a certain amount of "because I'm the boss and I said so" that is appropriate. Sometimes employees aren't always aware of all the knowledge required to make a decision, and are therefore baffled by some decisions. However, when it can be done, explaining to staff members the reason behind decisions, and allowing them input and feedback of those decisions builds a much stronger team going forward.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
I like the stance this article takes on a positional leader. The idea of a positional leader seems like it would easily happen and it is something that should be avoided. When a person lets power go to their head and lets the authority of a title be the driving factor behind all commands, it seems like it would be a factor that would cause disgruntled employees. Using a position's authority to rule over employees is a mistake that a lot of managers allow to go to their head and it becomes a real issue in relation to employees.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
I cannot agree with the article anymore "Whenever people use their position to lead others for a long time and fail to develop genuine influence, they become branded as positional leaders, and they rarely get further opportunities for advancement in that organization." There are so many people like this organization, they don't have what it takes to be a true leader. Not many people can change this in themselves after being a positional leader for a number of years.

Instant MBA: Being A ‘Positional Leader’ Will Hurt the Company
I do believe being the say-so manager is very unhealthy for a company. Especially if the manager has done it for years. The longer you have done it really does make it difficult to quit. So when it comes to playing the position of leadership you must have a way of doing it right.

employees respect a leader who can get out there and show you how the job gets done. The begin to doubt leaders when they hide behind their position. It doesn't inspire any confidence that they know what they are doing.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
The leader has a very important position in a company. They should set the mood, example, and atmosphere of the whole business. In order to do this they need to use effective communication skills. They need to make their employees feel as if they are there to help them grow and develop. If you use in effective communication or are a positional leader, you set a negative atmosphere which could in return cause your business to be unsuccessful.

After reading this article one will easily be able to see the positional leaders that have been in their lives. Now knowing what a positional leader is, this has caused me to never want to become one. Therefore telling others what to do because of your title is the wrong thing for the person making the order and person receiving it.

I did't like this article too much. But being a great leader is about more than just barking orders down peoples throat. You have to establish some kind of relationship with your employees to gain their trust and respect. I agree with John C Maxwell when he says If you have been a positional leader, you can change. However, you need to recognize that the longer you have relied on your position, the more difficult it will be for you to change others' perception about your leadership style.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
This article warns the reader of being a positional leader. A positional leader is a person that uses his position in the business to manage employees. This is a terrible way to manage, because it causes people to not respect you. When you manage others with a different leadership style they would listen to you because they wanted to and respected you, not because they were forced to. When you use leadership styles where people respect you, they are willing to do more and work harder than if they were obligated to obey you and scared of you. I definitely believe it is important to be aware of your leadership style and make sure you are using an appropriate style.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
It is important to have a good relationship with your employees. Strictly using the "because I said so approach", employees are eventually going to get tired of hearing this. This is going to prohibit you from getting promoted and other types of incentives. As a leader, you need to motivate your employees. Give them a reason to want to do these things. At Sonic, we had a problem with "suggestive selling". This is when a customer tells you their order you say, "Would you like cheese on that today?" Mystery shoppers would come and do random audits of customer service and the appearance of your store. You can tell people to suggestive sell until your blue in the face. I came up with a game that motivated the employees to want to do it. Every time someone bought the item they suggested, you would get a point. The person with the most points at the end of the day would win a prize/drink/food and many other items, depending on what the item of the day was. This drastically improved not only our mystery shop scores, but our sales as well. This is why it is important to not only say, because I said so. Influence the employees to want to do better.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
In this link it says that a boss can lose creditability if they are not being attentive to an employee's feelings. If the boss is just telling the employee what to do in a disrespectful manner it can hurt his/her relationship with the employee. Being a positional leader can also lead to an employee to quit. If employee doesn't like the way business is being handled and there are numerous amount of complaints, if the is someone over that positional leader they may even get replaced.

INSTANT MBA: Being A 'Positional Leader' Will Hurt The Company
Nobody like the "because I said so" boss. People in positions of authority need to realize that their employees already respect them for that position. Ordering them around because you can is not going get you the desired results. Bosses who pave the way and get on their employees level tend to get that extra level of respect and employees tend to follow their direction better because of it.
