INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
It is vitally important to acknowledge EVERY individual's contribution to a project, just as it's just as important to acknowledge every individual's importance to the company or unit as a whole. As the author mentions, if we don't let people know that we appreciate their individual talents and/or contributions, they will eventually stop contributing to the extent they'd been doing. This is human nature. In teaching, we are encouraged to have students work in cooperative groups for the majority of the day. Each student has a unique role within his group, and they know it's important for each to perform his role to the best of his ability if the end result is to be the best possible. If I made the students feel as if their role didn't matter, then I shouldn't be surprised if the students simply sit and do nothing or give me mediocre work. By praising each student for his or her unique talents, though, I'm increasing the probability that they will continue to do their best work. The same theory applies in the business world.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
The idea of the meetings at the end of the periods is interesting. Acknowledging individuals on their efforts makes them feel like the work they are doing matters. As Lieb stated, if the workers think their work is unnoticed they will eventually put less effort into it. The company's progress will slack if your workers aren't motivated to work and give their ideas. Whether it is business or life, I believe it is important to show that you recognize the little things people do. Complementing them every now and then on their good work will make them feel better than only speaking to them if they aren't doing things correctly.

This article had a great idea about how to identify members of a group individaully and acknowledge how they contributed to help the company succeed. I believe this is a great idea and i'm sure the employees apprieciate being acknowledged. Alot of company's dont take advantage of this great idea and I can agree with the article on how the employees probally feel like a fish in a large pond.

I really like how this article points out the importance of acknowledging individual people in a company. It's important for companies that succeed from a group kind of atmosphere to take note of the individual effort that goes into it. Often times in a group project, there is always that one person who may go the extra mile or come up with a plan that makes it successful. "According to Lieb, it's important to acknowledge that person, whether privately or in front of the team. Without commending them for their individual contribution, they may begin to feel like a small fish in a big pond, and if they believe their advanced efforts will continuously remain largely unnoticed, eventually they'll put less into it." I definitely agree, I am in a sorority and although most of the things we do are as a group, there are always that one member who will put more effort into something than the rest. It is so important to recognize them individually, to let them know we appreciate their hard work and constant commitment. Each week we do a "member of the week" where we acknowledge a certain someone who has gone the extra mile in anything they have accomplished. I have been awarded this a couple times and it was a good feeling to know that others noticed my time and effort I put into my office as treasurer, as well as when I worked extremely hard during homecoming week to get everything done and perfected.

I agree with this article in that it is important to show appreciation for individual efforts in a project. Although it is a collaboration and involves much team effort, the project could not executed the same way without the individual people coming together. It's encouraging to employees when they get commended for their individual contribution. Giving individual's acknowledgement also gives them enthusiasm for future projects. Knowing that you appreciate them as an individual, may encourage them to want to do even better on the next project.

Instant MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People I agree with this article. People need to be recognized for their individual performance. Sometimes when people work in groups someone ends up doing a better job than others or they tend to lead the group over someone else. Its important to recognize those hardworking people. If people don’t get acknowledged than theirs no reason for someone to step up, no one would work harder than they had to.

"Even in a collaborative atmosphere, acknowledge individual people"
I've had my fair share of "going the extra mile," and not getting any recognition for it. I've even seen other employees take credit for what I did or do nothing at all and get praise from management. It's very demoralizing and lead me to work less efficiently. It is very important to acknowledge employees for hard work. It can be for creative ideas, working the shifts others don't want, or just working without complaining. That was one thing I always made sure to do when I managed at a restaurant. I always thanked my crew and let them know I appreciated everything they did for me as well as the company. Without acknowledging hard working employees, it causes demoralization, less productive workers, and an overall "stale mood" in the work place.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
People love to be commended for their good efforts. It builds our self esteem and confidence. David is right when he speaks on this subject in his article. Generally speaking if good efforts go unnoticed then that employee who made those efforts may perceive them to not to be necessary. If we recognize good efforts then they will be repeated and may even be advanced.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
This Article is one that hits home. Being an auditor, I constantly work in a group and as part of a team. An audit is no individual job. It takes every team mate to do their part for the audit to come together. Sometimes it gets frustrating when you know you are doing your part as well as parts that other team mates are slacking on. Sometimes it is nice for leaders to see the extra work you are putting forth and to commend you on that work. It doesn't have to be every single time, but it does need to take place. The article was right when it said it makes employees feel like a little fish in a big pond because I feel that way every day. It's nice when other recognize the efforts and the quality of work you are putting forth and it makes you only want to continue working hard..

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
Every individual deserves to be recognized for their individual efforts no matter how large the group they work in is. Without acknowledgement of one's work, people tend to not work as hard as they feel under appreciated. Personally, I hate when my efforts go without recognition and I want to work harder when my efforts get commended. Without a doubt, everyone loves to be recognized for their efforts.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People People love to be appreciate and recognized when they do good, otherwise how can they know they efforts were appreciate. It is human, it makes individual puts more efforts, even saying thank you for something small makes a big difference to an individual. Recognizing individual in a group also makes the other employees want to work extra to get recognition and brings positive competition in the work place. As a manager, you will always need to thank and recognize people for their efforts.

David Lieb says, "So if one guy makes a heroic contribution keeping the servers up during a big period of growth, we'll call that person out so the whole company will realize that person made a big contribution this time." David is saying, that he recognize his employees where credit is due and I agree with this. This can cause two positive things. The first on is to make the employee you recognized do better because he will like how it feel. Also it will push other employees to do better as well.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
This is a great point that should be applied to all group/team projects. A group doing really well does not mean that everyone in the group performed at 100% and gave their best. Even though the group is getting positive results it is important to acknowledge who put in more effort, because it would not be fair for someone that did not contribute much to receive the same credit as the rest of the group. The idea of the wrap-up meeting in the article is great and people that contribute the most will be recognized which will encourage them to do great next time as well.

INSTANT MBA: Even In A Collaborative Atmosphere, Acknowledge Individual People
It is extremely important to recognize when employees make great contributions to a company. Even when company's thrive off groups and team-work, each individual should be commended on their ideas and efforts. If an employees feel unappreciated or over-looked, they are likely to put in less effort the next time around. If an employee is acknowledged for their hard work, they will feel they appreciated. Verbal appraisal can go along way. It only takes a few seconds to say "Great Job" or "Keep up the good work" and will leave a lasting impression. Showing appreciation for your employees doesn't always have to be formal or in meetings but can take place in the break room or in the hallways as you pass by. Just make sure as a manager, you are taking the time to appreciate your employees individually and are not letting them go unnoticed. As a server, I am always quick to tell the busboys or kitchen staff thank-you when they are doing a great job. Without their hard work, I would not be able to get the things done that I need to accomplish.
