INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
I had never heard of issue spotting before I read this article, so I am glad I was introduced to the idea. Noticing issues within a company before they become major is very important. It seems easier to make minor changes to alleviate an issue before it becomes major. When a problem gets larger it will cost more to make changes and fix them. Although spotting issues before they get larger and surface may be difficult I think it would be a great idea to have someone in charge of this on your staff. Working to fix smaller issues can be beneficial to a company in the long run.

I definitely beleive in taking care of issues before they get out of hand. This article says one of the most important traits of a good CEO is being able to spot issues beforehand. Rainey says, "issue spotting is an exercise that focuses on pulling out the critical issues in a conflict. Once an issue is identified, the most effective CEOs then work quickly to squash the potential problem before it has time to grow into a crisis." Being able to do this is important for your business; if you can't spot issues before they become a disaster, then you can end up with more problems than you started with.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
Effective leadership requires a leader to view his or her organization both subjectively and objectively. With an objective eye, an executive or other leader can spot when things are wrong without prejudice. They need to see the big picture, be able to pick out weaknesses or chinks in the chain, and then make a plan to fix problems that arise. Attending to every issue, especially ones that could grow into disasters, is a must when leading an organization.

Instant MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters It’s important to point out problems before they get worse. Some of the simplest issues can turn into disasters if not handled correctly. Having to be in charge of people is the hardest part of being the boss. Knowing that whatever decision you have to make reflects other people is hard. Managers and other higher people in the company step down from their position because they cant handle the stress of the amount of work they have to do.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
I agree with the author of this article, problem solving is one of the big areas now days that differential between a an effective leader and one who is not. Of course before solving the problem, an effective leader need to identify or spot the problem then find ways of solving the problem before it grow and become a disaster. If a small problem is not solved at its initial stages it grows into big problem which may become even harder to solve or the participants may increase and it becomes a big disaster. The solving part may even involve other people not the leader, like employees talking to each other and solving the problem.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
I believe that this article gives great advice. The goal for many business men and women, especially those that are just starting out in the world of business, is to grow within the company they work. Many people plan on moving up within the company to a higher position, but not everyone knows how to do this. This article gives the advice that business men and women should be problem solvers. They should be taught to recognize conflicts and problems and fix them before they become a crisis. I think this is very important. However, this is not a trait that is often taught in school and colleges. Instead, students are taught more about processes and things we should do right away within a company, but what if these processes do not work? Students should be taught early not just the normal procedures and processes that we should implement but also how to recognize and solve the problems that these strategies cause.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
The author makes a great point when stating that effective CEOs first must learn to become effective "issue spotters" before they can expect to become expert business men or women. As a manager, it was so important that I was able to recognize an issue or potential problem as it was brewing and not be blinded to it until the top blew completely off. For example, if I had an employee who started showing up late to work on a regular basis, I had to have the ability to recognize a potential problem brewing and, then, work on resolving the issue before it effected company profits, employee morale, etc... and, even more importantly, before I'd have to let that employee go. By being able to see a potential problem before it became a disaster, I was able to prevent the disaster and, as a result, help that employee become a better employee while helping myself become a better manager and the company become a better company as well.

Don Rainey basically explain that it is good to spot problems before they become too big to handle in the article. If you spot the problem and address with before it become big, this can be another step in having a successful company.

This article gives good advice to any business and person. It is best to take care of issues instead of putting them off. When you can find a problem ahead of time, it is important to address it as soon as possible and find a way to take care of it. Problems that are left to the side and not taken care of can easily build up and, in the future, create a bigger problem or even multiple problems. As a CEO, it is important to have the skill be able to identity the issues and what causes them.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
Knowing how to spot issues before they occur is a trait we all could get better at, personally and in business. I found it interesting when Don mentioned that law students are eductaed in spoting issues. I am curious to know if they would have the general knowledge to spot business issues. Regardless this is a trait that all owners and executives should have and continually grow at.

INSTANT MBA: Spot Potential Problems Before They Become Disasters
Being able to see problems before they become one is very important for a business to succeed. If one can not see a problem before it takes affect then it may be your last mistake that will happen because you will no longer have a business. Many business owners did not know how to see a problem before it happened but learned from them and learned in the process in order to grow. If a business can not see problems as they occur then the leader is not doing their job. One can learn in the future from this article to always be looking for problems before they become too big and handle them in a professional manner.

"Spot potential problems before they become disasters"
The title to this article says it all about how potential problems have a way to goring into disasters. I've seen this occur first hand from a previous employer. The cashiers for this "mom and pop" type of restaurant earned tips on credit card transactions. The owners of this company never paid out any of these tips to their intended recipients, and instead pocketed these tips for themselves. They never even reported these tips on their tax returns. Myself and another employee noticed this and figured out how much they were pocketing a year. The owners saw us as potential problem, and long story short, neither of us had a job after a few weeks. This is of course a fraudulent way of dealing with a problem, but my former bosses saw myself and this other employee as a problem if we went public with this information, and fixed this problem by terminating our employment. It's important to see potential problems and prevent them from becoming disasters. You just need to make sure that when you fix these problems you aren't fixing them illegally.
