TITLE- RSA Shorts- Does Brainstorming Work?
I have always been taught that brainstorming is the key to creativity and new ideas. I really like how in this video the focus is on the conflict and criticisms that incline individuals to think outside of their initial perception. It allows us to deviate from the norm and think about what is not so common. As managers this can be a great message to keep in mind when assessing and managing our thought process.

I agree that when brainstorming you shouldn't criticize other peoples ideas. It is called brainstorming becuse its meant to get ideas flowing. They dont have to be genuis ideas, just original ideas. But constructive criticism can also be helpful. I liked this video.

We’ve always been taught that brainstorming is an important step in generating ideas and that we shouldn’t criticize the ideas brought up. This video refutes that ideas by stating that creative discussions are the key to generating better ideas. Conflict brings new ideas to the table and increases team engagement. I’ve never understood why bad ideas should be celebrated in brainstorming sessions since conversing on them wastes time. This video provides good tips for managers to take into account when planning a brainstorming session.

This video on brainstorming basically states that brainstorming is good as long as it doesn't involve criticisms. Well unfortunately 99% of the time criticism is going to happen. Therefore we spend more time putting down everyone else and arguing then we actually spend thinking of ideas.

I do not believe that brain storming does not work. Though he mentions that people are less likely to come up with original ideas, I do not think you have to criticize in order to come up with more ideas. Obviously some ideas are better than others, but constructive criticism or positive remarks to the other idea would be a better plan of action than debate. I understand you need to list the pros and cons of brainstorming, but being critical will not help employees working together.

I do believe critisms are important. However, they way you reprimand people will make the difference in getting them to brainstorm properly. People should only reprimand behavior not attack that person. When you attack that person you will not get the great results they are capable of giving you.

In short, no, brainstorming doesn't work. When in a brainstorming meeting, don't criticize. It causes people to clam up. Causes people to be less honest than they would have been originally. In situations where no one is being "judged" they are more open and more creative, and more willing to talk than in any other situation.

Brainstorming does not work. When in a group setting some people tend to shy away from sharing their ideas. When people are not in a group setting they are more honest and willing to share their ideas knowing they will not be judged or criticized.

I think that brainstorming is a very important technique that gets used day in and day out by businesses, students, individuals, etc. I think it is important to remember to not criticize others for their ideas or comments because then they become reluctant to speak up again, therefore the business could lose out on a great idea. When brainstorming everyone's ideas should be jotted down and as a group people should decide the direction to move forward in. I think it is very important for all businesses to do the brainstorming technique.

The person who came up with brainstorming just planned on people not judging other people, and that was supposed to work. Unfortunately, psychologists for about sixty years now have figured out that brainstorming doesn't work. The only way it can work is when if you are free to criticize others about their ideas. This allows for others to come up with way better ideas than before if you criticize them. Criticism helps move forward from the clichés.

I disagree. There are cases where brainstorming has been effective ally implemented. For example, the show south park, made a documentary on how they produce episodes. It was called "six days to air". It is how they go through the entire production process in 6 days. In the begging the writers hold a brainstorming session. They do this by outlawing criticism. They keep too the no bad ideas policy. At the end the head writers make a decision on which direction to go, but don't hate rejected ideas. They are one of the highest paid and longest running TV shows on air and do it by holding brain storming sessions.

We have all been taught that brainstorming is great tool to get out ideas on paper and figure out what our best ideas are, this is especially taught in English with writing papers. The main thing I took from this video was that it is crucial to not criticize other peoples ideas while brainstorming. The idea of brainstorming is to allow all of the possible information to be thrown out there and then taking a step back to look at the ones that seem like they would be the best.

This video takes a well known concept around the business world and breaks it down into a very meaningful aspect. Brainstorming is used everywhere. People believe that by throwing out a continuous amount of ideas and thoughts, there will be some brilliant idea that may find its way to the surface. However, when we brainstorm without allowing any type of constructive criticism, we lose our audience and ultimately lose our edge on being most creative. Criticism is necessary in finding those ideas that shape the way we live and learn. Negative criticism is completely different from constructive criticism. We all make mistakes but if we can be criticized in such a way that helps us see our mistake but also a solution to fixing it, we will be much more apt to follow through, over someone who is continually brought down and belittled.

Brainstorming is needed in business when it comes to creating new products or services. And I liked where he talked about how when you put people into a room together and tell them to brainstorm, you're going to get less ideas than if you had everyone come up with ideas on their own separately.

Brainstorming is an important aspect in business. I have participated in brainstorming meetings at my job that have been very beneficial. I do agree with the suggestion that constructive criticism is best, that way everyone will feel more comfortable in suggesting their ideas.
