I wish all the links of the day were this short! She really gives great advice. Breaking hard need to people is a tedious thing to do. If only some of the managers I know actually did this.

As a waitress, the most difficult/embarrassing thing I can do to a customer is tell them that their card has been declined, especially when they are with a large party. I've had to do this on multiple occasions, but always in a polite, respectful manner. The key is to go in, and treat them the way you would want to be treated in the same position. I always use discretion, and instead of making them feel as though i am accusing them of not having enough money, veer the conversations towards implying it could simply be our computers of their card in general.

Delivering difficult news should be done through empathy, honesty, and hope. Empathy allows the worker to know that you care. Honesty keeps them informed of what is really going on. Being honest is the best thing you can do for anyone. Hope helps you to guide them in the direction that they need to go in. Without hope, the other two become mute and the worker will become unmotivated because they cannot see the progress that they are suppose to be making.

I think this is the first 30 second MBA video that I have seen that the person actually answers the question. She makes a lot of good points and gives people a really good outline to follow for delivering tough news. I would normally just spit it out and rip the band aid off quickly, but now I see that is probably not the best way to do that. I think that empathy and hope are really the key to giving bad news to anyone.

As a manager, there will be countless times where you may have to deliver difficult news or information to someone and it will be useful to know in what manner to do it in. In the video she gives three examples of what needs to be done when delivering difficult news. This video didn't present groundbreaking information, but it was a useful tidbit to watch.

It can be very hard to break the news to people especially to a person who has trouble disappointing someone. However, as a business person you must know how to interact with people positively. Be stern, as well as empathetic and always encouraging as a good leader would do. It doesn't have to be taken personally, and it all depends on your sincere delivery efforts.

Empathy, honesty, and hope are very important qualities to share with people. It is hard to receive bad news, but when it is delivered with care it is easier to accept.
