Motivation is found within. Not everyone needs to be motivated. Some people are naturally motivated. Giving incentives and rewards can be motivating, but overall, rewards always keep people motivated until the activity is over. Rewards must be used at the right time and for the right reason. Knowing when to give a reward and incentive will keep your team motivated.

This video explains to us how to reward people and keep them motivated through incentives. This is not as easy as one would think, because different people respond to different incentives. Its all about finding that special niche that motivates your individual employees. This is our duty as a manage because the great managers know how to motivate their employees.

What I took away from this video is that we are all motivated by different things. What I found the most interesting is that people are willing to go the extra mile if work doesn't feel like work. If you allow me to be who I am and enjoy what I do without restraints, I'm much more likely to go beyond the expectations that my managers set in place. Everyone likes incentives such as bonuses or promotions, but there are other less costly ways to motivate your employees. No one wants to work harder to gain little to nothing in bonuses or a far off promotion. In the past, jobs would offer incentives like commissions to drive sales. Companies would also create incentives such as signing bonuses to increase the number of people referred by employees. While these incentives are nice, they are not always practical. I want to be able to motivate my employees to express creativity rather than motivate them in monetary gain. I would much rather my employees enjoy their jobs and foster creativity than have employees who just come to work for the money and could care less about the company!

This video breaks down motivation by using a white board and animations to simply describe what does and doesn't work. It shows us that remark works for mechanical work but not cognitive work. I think this goes back to passion. People are always going to lack motivation if they don't have some type of passion for what they do. Organizations need to give employees a reason for what they're doing and a goal. If they work every day, doing even the simplest of tasks, towards something they can't even set a goal for, or something that they can't wrap their head around, they're going to lose drive.
