I would definitely share this link with friends and colleagues. Thank you professor! I am going to say through experience and working in today's society it has shown me to be a leader that can adapt to change very quickly in business. Like the video says I do not have all the answers but it definitely makes sense to be informed and make informative and good thought out decisions in business. If you do not make changes in business quickly enough it could lead to not capturing an opportunity that could make or break your business.

When leaders take the time to listen to what their team has to say they will often be surprised. This video was a different approach than what most would expect to hear, but it's so true. Today's world is completely different than it was years ago and has turned into a better working environment in most feilds. Leaders don't have the answers to everything, if they did they could do most of the work themselves but it takes their team members help to make the business succeed.

I like the idea of "creating a culture where people can surprise you." Far too many managers are too egotistical and unwilling to listen to their employees. In this changing global landscape, a culture of openness is necessary to create new and innovative ideas.

You want your employees to surprise you. You want them to come up with their own ideas and own ways of solving problems. You have to have a corporate culture that allows this to happen, so you have to develop the correct environment for employees to be themselves in. Leaders aren't God, and they don't know everything which is why your employees have to interpret on their own what you expect out of them.

The proposed argument is largely contingent and dependent upon the given industry being examined. For example, social media and technology companies tend to be more decentralized as websites and programs are becoming more and more open source. Increased transparency and a lack of hierarchy, allow users/workers to shape software and websites to their needs. Therefore decentralization, or a lack of traditional leadership, can completely add value to a company. Other industries such as construction or production/processing are more dependent on a hierarchy to get things done however. In these industries very precise specifications need to be met and executed. A traditional leader makes sure this happens.

The economy and the business world are always changing. It is important to build a culture where employees surprise their leaders. Today’s leaders don’t have all the answers and are not in control of every detail. Good leaders should listen to others ideas.

Paul Venables: In a highly networked, global world, has the meaning of leadership changed?
I don't know that he addressed leadership, but he addressed leaders. The way in which people lead today is not ego driven, but built on teamwork. He acknowledges that a leader doesn't know everything, but surrounds himself with those who can help. I don't quite get the analogy of cut a hole in the fence and let them run... but ok.

I liked this video because I find it to be very true. Nowadays, employees want to have freedom and flexibility and don't want to stick behind these set of unwritten rules of what is appropriately right at the company. It is important for leaders to allow their employees to go on their track at work and to not follow the leader.

This video addresses the typical leadership style most companies still have. In its time, leaders would have all the answers and be expected to lead the way to success. This video is throwing away that notion and explains that managers enable their employees so that everyone, in a way, is a leader. This also is allowing the freedom of creativity and the flow of it to solve problems. However, a manager is still responsible for the outcome of his team or department. Having answers wouldn't hurt.

I liked this video, leaders need to here there subordinates thoughts and ideas. Leaders do not know everything and need to know the ideas of others to figure out the best way to accomplish tasks at hand.

Nobody has all the answers. This video makes a very good point in remembering to create an atmosphere for creativity and suggestions. If the environment is suited for people to at least try and answer questions leaders are faced with, it will be beneficial for both sides. He mentioned how there are some environments where people just follow the leader. This can be very dangerous if the leader does not know what they are doing.

I think the meaning of leaderships for the most part stays the same. But I also think it changes depending on the situations. I see leaders delegating to make their job easier. It also depends on the company and the person who is the leader. If they have the drive to lead their employees, they will be a great leader. If they do not care very much, then they clearly will not lead their team as good.

I think this guy is very accurate in his description of what it means to be a true leader. So often, we are employed into businesses where the leaders feel as though they are "superior" and "all knowing" toward the success of the business. In most cases, they don't value the input of their employees and will rarely promote a sense of creativity within the workplace. In order for a business to truly prosper and strive, the leaders must allow their employees to feel as though they are an important part of the functions of the business and its' success. Whenever you promote a sense of creativity and empowerment, you allow your employees the freedom to speak out their ideas, changes, and suggestions. Often, the lower level employees are on the front lines of the business and understand every day activities better than the higher level executives. It is critical that we allow creativity and promote new ideas. By doing this, we create empowerment, engagement, and ultimately help the business and employees grow as a whole.

I agree with that. That is why they teach us so much about leadership in school. It takes more than one to make some decisions sometimes. Just because one person has what seems to be a great idea it does not mean that it is the only great idea out there. When more than one ideas are combined then it usually makes for a better decision.

Im not sure I completely agree with this video. I would like my leader to have answers. I agree that a leader should inspire followers and their ideas, but sometimes there needs to be someone with the answers. There has to be someone to look to for guidance.
