Students, Please view and comment on this link of the day - yes, for your education, but also for the points, of course! Watch the video below: TITLE - Paul Venables: In a highly networked, global world, has the meaning of leadership changed? Then, post a comment in reply to this discussion thread. Again, what to post? Here are some ideas: + What did you take away from the video? + How does the video relate in some way to your past experience (work, as a consumer, family, school, etc.)? + How might you use these ideas in your own career? Good luck! David

I know how I'm leading a group of people, lets say if I'm going to the club with a group of friends. I dont just say where going to one specific club and thats it, I ask my friends if they are interested in a different club or they might be interested in going to a bar thats nearby. Getting other peoples insight when trying to lead people is great because what you think alone isnt always the best outlook when trying to lead a group or company.

From this video I took away that it is important to listen to people. When leaders listen to their team the team will always respond with more enthusiasm and surprises. The speaker also emphasized 'stepping back' to allow others to lead themselves. Other than this idea I found this video helpful.

I do find that the definition of a leader and leadership in general is much different than in the past. A good leader should always listen to his or her working team, take everyone's opinion into consideration, and give team members the opportunity to create ideas and run with them. Micromanaging is out; people managing is in!

I liked this video. In today's world, leaders need to listen to their employees and give them chances to make certain decisions themselves. Employees need to have a right to be able to speak up and give opinions. Creativity happens this way by combining different and unique backgrounds.

This video seems to have a lot of truth behind it. I was hoping that it would have been a little bit longer because I liked the direction in which his response was headed. Leaders now a days really can't claim to have every answer for everything, it takes teamwork and cooperation between people to figure out solutions. Also, CEOs or owners of a business must include everyone important in decision making, it can't be one person, don't get me wrong the leader will take the responsibility if it doesn't work. The world is too advanced for one person to dictate how and where a business goes, people who are a part of the business need to come together and talk about the direction to go in and what to create and how to market. One person isn't enough, corporations have to rely on other people, as well as, leadership to be able to succeed.

This video is right. You need to challenge people all the time. Like the video stated having the employees march behind the leader, it will not cut it now a days, because leaders do not have all of the answer. The best thing to do is let employees surprise you with what they can do. This way they are being challenged and they can bring back to the table something innovative, that could not have been done by just following the leader.

Just let me run leaders. He makes a great point that leaders don't have all the answers. Most leaders don't have any of the answers. The leader has a team who does most of the research the team. They brainstorm and then bring those ideas to the leader. As a team the leader helps dissect those answers. Leaders are like the parents who have to make sure everything is in place.

In a highly networked, global world, has the meaning of leadership changed? Todays leader needs to let people be able to surprise them. TOdays leader also need to let people have space to work and innovate.

I think the speaker in the video made some good points, but I do not think the meaning of leadership has changed. I don't think the meaning of leadership will ever change actually. As said by Warren Bennis, "Management is doing things right; Leadership is doing the right things." You must have vision as leader so others can help you define the mission. I do not think that will ever change.

I think that today still leaders need to have an ample amount of answers and resources to get answers no matter what. This may be a result of my own conformity, however I think that knowledge is a part of being a leader. Knowledge has nothing to do with a person's ego, but everything to do with why people look to you for help as a leader.

Paul Venables: In a highly networked, global world, has the meaning of leadership changed? This video was another that showed the importance of listening. Leaders aren't in place anymore to just make rules and point in directions. They are there to coax ideas and productivity out of their teams.

I find that the definitions of leader and leadership are generally much different today than they were 20 years ago. A great leader always listens to their working team and take everyone's opinion into consideration when making a decision. Knowing your employees and being able to connect is very important today- it makes your team feel wanted and appreciated.
