I definitely agree with Pozin about the precautions to take before terminating an employee. If I was at a position of authority to where I could terminate an employee, I would make a list of potential problems that might arise and see to it that every possibility of a potential conflict would be resolved. I would have the answer to every question that the terminated employee would possibly have: when and how they could expect their final check; reasoning as to why they were fired; what they could have done and/or not done to prevent termination. Not only would I do this, but I would try to keep the vibe optimistic. I would give them a list of their strengths not just their weaknesses so that they can take the constructive criticism as a learning experience.

INSTANT MBA: When Firing Someone, You Need To Protect Yourself As Well
This article makes perfect sense. No one is usually happy when they are being let go from a job. I can completely see where having your ducks in a row can be entirely beneficial. If someone begins to yell or overreact, you can give them there paperwork, last check, vacation pay, etc. to end the conversation and send them on their way. Especially today, we live in a much more difficult economy where jobs are harder to get so people probably tend to overreact more than they used to when they are terminated from a job.

Instant MBA: When Firing Someone, You Need To Protect Yourself As Well
No one likes to fire anyone. It is a dreaded experience. I agree with this article because if you do have to fire someone, then you should be prepared. Always let someone go with dignanty. Have checks and all paperwork ready. A very important piece of advice given in this article is to have passwords changed. I think sometimes you may be so worked up about the situation, that you may forget to protect yourself and your company.

INSTANT MBA: When Firing Someone, You Need to Protect Yourself As Well
Firing someone is probably something I could never do because I show too much emotion. I would end up changing my mind and letting them stay once they started crying. I agree with this article though because you need to have all the evidence and paperwork in hand ahead of time in order to protect yourself. Sometimes firing can be chaotic because people get their feelings hurt even if it isn't intentional some can lash out in the heat of the moment. Firing is worse than getting kicked off of your high school basketball team, it could possibly effect your life especially when supporting a family.
