Students, Please view and comment on this link of the day - yes, for your education, but also for the points, of course! Watch the video below: TITLE - What Do People Want from Their Leaders
Then, post a comment in reply to this discussion thread. Again, what to post? Here are some ideas: - What did you take away from the video?
- How does the video relate in some way to your past experience (work, as a consumer, family, school, etc.)?
- How might you use these ideas in your own career?
Good luck! David

What people want most from their leaders is to be seen as a person. No one wants to be seen as a number or as just an employee. They want their leader to actually know them and appreciate them. People also want their leaders to be honest and authentic. Leaders need to make themselves available to the people they manage and conduct themselves in an honest and respectful manner.

I think it is important for leaders to be excited about the job they are doing. To be an effective leader, you should be excited about your job because without excitement it makes things boring for coworkers. The teacher I had one semester was so excited about teaching his class he motivated students to be more focused in his classroom. His enthusiasm about the subject made him a strong leader. In the workplace, I want to be a strong leader and absolutely love my job.

I will definitely share this link with my friends and colleagues professor!! I take away that employees in today's business world want to be a part of the whole. They want to mean something for the company. Studies have shown that employees #1 reason for happiness in the workplace is not money but being accepted and making sure their contribution means something. I am a person who is positive and full of life. At work I notice how employees are in their own bubble. No excitement or ambition for life. I have worked very hard for everything I have accomplished and as a manager I instill that in my employees. I have evolved as a manager and try to embrace a contagious and exciting culture at work.

I believe every follower wants a leader with these qualities. I know as an employee I like when every day is something new and exciting. I also like that the business I work for is authentic and we all work as a community. Last, I love that my boss makes me feel significant to the success of the company. Marucci, the company I work for is always asking for everyone's new ideas and no ones ideas ever go unnoticed even if the plans are not followed through. Every leader should make their employees feel excited about work and like their a human being and not just an employee.

I think it is sad that many individuals do not trust their leaders today. I think the qualities listed in the video are great qualities that a leader should have. A great leader should have community to help everyone feel united towards a common goal, authenticity so that they can gain people’s trust, significance so all of the followers feel important and excitement so that people feel engaged in the leader’s goals. Leaders with these attributes are the kinds of people that I would look up to and want to follow.

I would share this video with others. I worked for a construction company and have had multiple foremans as my boss. They are suppose to lead you to get the job done an SHOW you how they want it done a specific way. Well some of these foremans were very poor at their job and expected us to figure it out on our own and NEVER help us in any way. But I have had two or three foremans get down in the hole and help you show you how they want a certain thing done. They see you as a person and not as their employee. You could trust these people and they would show their gratitude toward you when you got the job done.

I used to work at The Pita Pit. In downtown Hammond and I have become good friends with the general manager there. I would recommend this video to her to show to her shift managers to help them grow as leaders, as well as to help the shift managers understand more about leadership.

This video is a very accurate description of what is going on within businesses today. Every manager or executive that you talk to is saying the same things, "My employees are lazy! They are not moving up! They are hindering my company!" However, we often miss the most obvious idea and point: Perhaps these individuals are not succeeding and being productive, because they feel as though they are unimportant, overlooked, and forgotten. A person's name is to them the sweetest sound they ever hear. By simply remembering the names of your employees, you can instill a sense of importance in their mind, causing them to want to move forward and become even more "noticed and important". Growing a business is a team effort and is not something easily accomplished when the leaders and executives of the company lock themselves in their offices and simply expect quotas and objectives to be completed or met. When we begin taking the time to understand our employees, and dispersing them into categories in which they are the strongest and most effective, we can create motivated teams, who are productive, motivated, and confident because they feel as though they are needed and their ideas are heard. I enjoyed this video. Even though it is short, it is very prevalent to what the world goes through today within the business world and within the personal world of all individuals.

What people what in a business leader today is someone who is actually a person, and not this made-to-perfection robot. The employees and clients want to feel as though they belong in the business and that they are not just there as the worker bees. I find that every manager and business leader should watch this video so that they know how to work with their employees. From my personal experience, I never felt like I was part of the team at work, that I was simply there to make sure that all of my boss's personal work was taken care off. When an employee feels as though they are part of the team, they will be more efficient and will work more effectively.

The four qualities mentioned in the video are very important for leaders to have in the business world. The quality that stood out to me was significance. I feel that it is important for leaders to appreciate what their followers are doing for the business and should recognize them when it is needed. Workers would like to know that what they are doing is noticed and being appreciated would continue to keep them motivated to do their work.

I enjoyed this video. Being authentic is so important to me and in the business world. I have worked for a company with different types of managers trying to manage this business at the same time. Some great leaders and some not so great leaders. Having the comparison back to back between shifts, I can see it more clearly. Some leaders get more excitement through to their staff, some just yell and get you down and frustrated. I think positive feedback is equally or even more important than negative feedback. I would much rather work for a company and their leaders they provide for the staff to be authentic, passion, and enthusiasm about their job so it makes for a more encouraging and fun atmosphere.

I agree that it's a shame that we don't trust our leaders. But it's true. We as people have been betrayed so many times, following blindly into dangerous situations. Whose fault is that really? As a follower, I agree that I want the 4 things mentioned in the video. And as a leader, I feel that I am and can provide all of those things. I have a great relationship with all of my coworkers and friends. I love working in groups. I love leading because I feel that I truly listen and care about what everyone has to say. I believe in fairness and equality and I want everyone to receive what they deserve. This video lacked depth to me. It was more of a broad message, but nevertheless, I hope to be a great leader in my future career to lead my team to success.

TITLE- What Do People Want from Their Leaders
Many employees want to be lead but only by a true leader. A leader is someone who cares about their self, the community, and the individual. Leaders make everyone around them feel important and empowered to constantly improve. Achieving the status of leader has little to do with personal success, as that is basically a prerequisite for the job. Being a leader is majorly about what you bring out in others. This message translates to any field of business and is a valuable lesson to learn if one wants to successfully maintain a leadership role in not only their career, but also their life in general.

This is a great video in the sense that it flips the question of "what makes successful leader?" into "what do the followers want from their leader?" This addresses the goal as well as the path to get there. We see a lot of situations where lack of performance plagues the workplace; and very little changes until it changes from the top down. Employees want to see community, authenticity, and excitement from their leaders so they can feel that way as well. If I can personally see my supervisor or manager is authentic in his words and actions, is excited about what he does, communicates well with me and the people I work with, and acknowledges my work and performance then I can reciprocate that as well. Bottom line is that effective leaders should understand the impacts they have on the people who look up to them, and also understand that these impacts (positive or negative) will ultimately affect the business's performance. There are many managers and companies who have yet to realize the importance of this. I would recommend this video to anyone who is stepping into a role of leadership.
