Students, Please view and comment on this link of the day - yes, for your education, but also for the points, of course! Watch the video below: TITLE - Andy Dunn: Leaders born or made? Then, post a comment in reply to this discussion thread. Again, what to post? Here are some ideas: - What did you take away from the video?
- How does the video relate in some way to your past experience (work, as a consumer, family, school, etc.)?
- How might you use these ideas in your own career?
Good luck! David

I believe good leaders are certainly born and raised with certain traits, but the skills needed to become a truly great leader must be learned at some point. Taking classes or seminars can enhance these skills.

A person might be born with characteristics of leadership but if that person doesn't sharpen those characteristics and put them into practice, those traits go to waste. And in order to hone those skills of leadership, they have to surround themselves with people that can teach them and that they can learn from. A person must realize they have an advantage of being born with certain traits and in order to live out the life of a leader, they must use and improve those traits.

You can be born with some of the traits to become a leader. Surrounding yourself with successful leaders is important too. I plan to put this to practice when I start my career. I am going to try to learn as much as I can from the leaders around me.

I would definitely share this link with friends and colleagues. Thank you Professor! I would say that this video is on point when it comes to becoming a good leader has to do with the people you surround yourself with. There are some leaders that are born to lead , but there are those that are also polished and have developed into the leaders of today. I was a person who was very shy since a very young age. I tried to be more outgoing and even took jobs where I would have to interact with the public. These decisions plus having friends and colleagues that praise you and lift you are up in life is very fundamental. I feel that through these life experiences it has made me a well rounded individual and leader.

I believe that people are born with certain characteristics that can make them a good leader, BUT if that person does not initiate drive into themselves to better those characteristics and make a change the leader can be lost. I do agree with the speaker on surrounding yourself with people who ultimately want you to succeed and can help you be a better you. I believe leaders are made from every day to day activity and every interaction they face.

Some people are born to become leaders. Others it takes time for their skills to be shown that they can be a leader. Like the video says, if you surround yourself with others who want you to prosper then you will. I think leaders have to go through trials in their life to obtain certain skill sets also.

I do believe that leaders are both born and made. I think that some people are born with the traits that it takes to be a good leader. However, I do agree that leaders are more commonly made. With the right skills and hard work, I believe anyone can be a successful leader.

Some people are born with leadership qualities but should also attend lectures and seminars to enhance those qualities. Those who are not born with those qualities can learn them and can be "made" into leaders.

I do believe that many individuals are born with a natural ability to lead. I do believe that some individuals are more skilled in leadership areas than the person standing beside them may be. However, I believe that every individual has an equal opportunity to change the world. Leaders are built and developed. One of the most common necessities to becoming a leader is having confidence in your own abilities and using the qualities of leaders around you as a launching pad and growth process, rather than being intimidated by their skills. The real truth is that everyone is a leader of something. Whether you are leading a group to a successful career, or leading a group down a path of destruction, you are still a leader in some sense of the word. It's not necessarily about "if" we become a leader; but rather, it is about "when" we become leaders. We will always have followers. It is our duty to determine what kind of leader we want to be and what kind of legacy we want to leave with the world.

I believe that some people are born with the ability to lead others. While leadership may be a skill that can be developed on, I feel that each leader in the world was born with some sort of ability and just developed on that throughout the years. I do agree, however, that in order to be a good leader, you have to surround yourself by people who also have some form of leadership ability.

TITLE- Andy Dunn: Leaders born or made?
I really liked this video because it points out something that might not be the first thought that comes to mind when thinking of leadership. Andy points out the fact that being a successful leader is choosing whom you surround your self with. I know that I along with many other leaders tend to be highly self-motivated, but others have the ability to motivate me far beyond the limits of what I can achieve alone. I think this is a very valuable lesson that anyone who seeks a leadership role should keep in mind.

This is a good video because it lets people know that anyone can be a leader, not just the people with the correct DNA. Leadership is absolutely about how you decide to live your life and how you let life influence your actions. Some people may be born with a better ability to be charismatic or have a personality that's less shy, but that doesn't always mean a future leader and extraordinaire. More importantly, leadership is a proactive lifestyle. It's seeking out others who will better your own life, to constantly improve yourself. You won't be a better leader without changing your old habits. Certainly something to keep in mind if I ever doubt my own abilities.

I agree with Andy that leaders are not just born they are also made. I agree that those who are not born with qualities of a leader can be made by the choices they make and the people they are surrounded by. If they make good choices they can be successful and by surrounding themselves with the right people they will learn what it takes to be a great leader.

I believe leaders can be made. There are certain aspects of a good leader that can be learned. I do not believe you have to be born a good leader. Some people may be born with the natural ability to lead but I do think most traits can be learned. It does make a difference as to who you talk to and hangout with as to who you will become. I always try to surround myself with people who are smarter and more successful than myself. I think it helps me because it challenges me more to become a more successful person.
