Having something that makes you different from everyone else is important, otherwise, you're just like everyone else. Brand awareness is not only important in selling your business, but also in personal selling. When trying to sell yourself, your brand, you need a competitive advantage. It's important to capture the attention of your customer. I agree that being average could very well be worse than being bad.

When a business offers an ordinary quality of product and service, it makes it difficult to attract customers. Why should customers stop going to that pizzeria that they’ve been going for 5 years, and start to go to yours just because it’s newly opened? Customers don’t buy that, unless you have something different or special to offer, which differentiate yourself from other competitors.

This video made me think back to my marketing classes on advertising products. The reason products do so well is because there is something different about them that is relevant. There needs to be something different about your product or there will be no reason for someone to buy it. That difference needs to be important to the consumer. Products that are seen as ordinary will not last long. There needs to be a distinction among all the other products so it stands out and is noticed. This is why branding is so important. Brands help point out the difference and send a message to the consumer that what is different about the product is relevant to them. Successful products need to have something different than the rest.

I understand exactly what he is talking about. I do not want my work to just be ordinary. I want people who aspire to be like me and say wow when I do something great at my job. However, it rarely happens. I think it is because we expect people to be perfect and go above and beyond. Great work does not get the attention it deserves most of the time. We can only blame ourselves for not giving the reaction to people when they do a great job. Most people do not stop to 'smell the roses" anymore. If people did then maybe we would get a more positive feedback from them. So I will make it my goal to complement someone everyday, when they have deserved it. I think that could make a world of difference.

Developing a “wow factor” is something I learned in my advertising class. People are bombarded with so much at one time, that the only thing that can get their attention is a “wow” moment. Customers, potential employers, and even potential clients crave for things that are new and exciting. No one wants to be bored by boring, “regular” ideas or products.

This video definitely was not a favorite of mine but I can definitely say I received the message from it. The speaker talked about not being "ho-hum" or ordinary. I think this is important in business because straying away from ordinary gives you a leg up on the competition. Even in our everyday lives we should strive to be extraordinary. We should strive for this in order to be noticed and recognized.

Distinction is and will continue to be a major business asset, regardless of what form it takes! In modern day markets, every company is fast in claiming to have it. When watching this video, I think heavily on my vacation, over winter break, to the San Francisco bay area and Silicon Valley. The technology scene demonstrates the above perfectly in regards to distinction. The city's economy consists largely of technology startups and related companies, every one of them promising "unique" and "differentiated" services or products (most of which delivered). They do this because distinction sells, adding interest or benefit. While distinction was neat to see...I arrived at a scary conclusion: too much of it can be harmful and create negative effects. This phenomenon begins to happen due to oversaturation within a particular environment, where competition is all pushing for distinction as well. While extreme, it is comparable to hundreds of people screaming into a dark room. How do you begin to pick a person from the crowd? To conclude, distinction is strong, but powerful distinction requires clever branding and extremely strong market penetration or else a truly great product/service will fail to be recognized as anything but "ho-hum".

I agree whole heartedly with this video, in order for a business to succeed it has to be better than "ho-hum" and a step above the competition. Just like anything else in order to stand out, you must have that "something special" that no one else has brought to the table. This would definitely be a good trait when applying for a job or promotion in order to succeed over the other candidates. I like to do more than what is expected at my job, in order to show that I am capable of doing more than just the ordinary.

Everyone wants their business to standout from the crowd, to be distinctive and to be the best. Distinction is key to a successful product or service. What is to stop a consumer from going to another business if your products are “ho hum” or just like all of the other ones? I would say I agree being at a standstill in life and business is worst than failing.

Wow. I thought this clip was the exact opposite of "Ho-Hum". Granted it was a fairly basic video, the message was incredible. Do you want your business to just be okay? For it to drown in a sea of mediocrity or be excellent. If someone tells me my business is okay, I am going to have to find out what happened that prevented them from saying exceptional?

I think the idea to extraordinary can apply to businesses as well as us as individuals. The need to be extraordinary is of great importance due to the fact that there is many competitors that can perform at the “ho hum” level whether it be other companies or employees. Because of the massive supply of workers one must be able to differentiate themselves from other job candidates. In the same instance, consumers expect a standard level of quality, so in order to compete these days companies need to be above average. Companies need to gain some sort of competitive advantage to distinguish themselves from competitors.

I liked the video. I think it placed emphasis on the importance of standing out. All organization should strive to be extraordinary with in their own standards. Extraordinary things elevates everyone who comes in contact of it. It enhances business experiences for both the company and consumers. However, being extraordinary is not and easy task it takes hard work, persistence, and innovation. So the reality of things only a few will be extraordinary in business and life.

This video emphasizes that businesses should not just be ordinary, they should be extraordinary. They should stand out among all the other businesses. Sometimes is worse to blend in than it is to be terrible. If a business is struggling and getting bad publicity, that gives them a chance to change and better themselves, and then in turn will get good publicity. If the business is just ordinary and then they try to better themselves, there will not be such a dramatic change, and it will be harder to stand out among the competition.

For a business to succeed it must have something to make it pop; stand out. You need something that sets you apart from the competition. If you are just another burger joint, you won’t have those high revenues that you would like to see. It’s the same with being a manager. If you are just another person in power you won’t see a big difference with your workers, but if you are someone who goes above and beyond for your employees, they will go above and beyond for you. Good is good, but great is better.

With the overload of businesses today, it is almost hard to make it if youre just "ordinary". When deciding where to purchase something, you can choose from nearly hundreds of places. If they all carry the same product or service for close to the same price, the question is, "Whats gonna set me apart from the others?". That is where a business has to strive to be extraordinary. The differences can be in the appearance, office staff, customer service, which I personally think is most important, or maybe even prices and convenience. Whatever it is though, your company must find its way to stand out from the others. You must exceed in at least one area, if not multiple.
