I found this article to be a little harsh on small businesses. I guess my heart goes out to those mom and pop stores who have put their blood, sweat, and tears into their business. I know it wasn't always easy for them to get started so they obviously have a lot of pride in their business. I do agree that they need to be willing to give and take a little when it comes to change. Unless they are very successful in their ways, they should be open to changing things around. If they are struggling and not willing to seek change, then I don't feel sorry for their business failing. While it is good to have pride, sometimes too much pride can be a bad thing. Thinking your business is perfect and has no room for changing things is a big mistake. There is always room for improvement and owners should constantly be looking to make their business better.

What Tabatha is trying to get small business owners to understand is that some of the most influential causes to a business' failure is the owner themselves. A business' growth and success can be a direct reflection on how the owner operates their company. Whether they make sound or poor decisions can be a direct link to their performance. Like Tabatha mentions once you have been in the flow of things people generally tend to not want to change how they have been doing things which is why later on their business fails.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When They're The Problem
Nobody likes to be told that they are the reason something is not working or that they are doing something wrong. Especially not when they own and run their own business. They believe that what they think and what they are doing is how it will be and that they are doing fine. They know their business is hurting financially, but they don't want to accept that their methods of running things are probably the reason it’s failing. I personally enjoy watching Tabitha's Salon Takeover. I think it is wonderful for her to go in and try to help these owners and workers even though she catches attitude from everyone. She also gives each salon a makeover, which I think gives the owners a sense of a new beginning and helps them believe it really is time to make a change. Although Tabitha catches attitude from everyone, she still conducts herself very professionally, which is why I would take advice from her on running a business.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When They're The Problem
Do not be reluctant to change. The market and consumer taste is changing every day, so it should be fairly obvious to change some aspects of your business even if those changes are slow and gradual. Just because you have been running a business one way does not mean it is the right way. Your stubbornness is likely to be a reason you are leaving money on the table.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When They're The Problem
I have watched the TV show mentioned and I agree completely. In order to be successful you have to be open to new ideas and change. Although no one likes to admit that they are wrong, it is better to do so. Another thing I think business owners should do is talk to their employees. They are the ones that are present every day and might reveal something the owner never thought of. It is one thing to be firm on the way you want to do things but if your business is failing, being firm may not be the best thing. Being a business owner is probably stressful even when you are doing well. If someone comes to you owners should listen. Most of the time a person is not going to say something unless they truly feel it would make a difference.

I agree with this article. I think it becomes so easy to get set in your ways, especially when they work for you in the beginning. However, I believe change is completely necessary for any business, and even person, to grow. The world is constantly changing, and continuously coming up with new ideas and improvements. I feel that by not keeping up with the trends, we can fall behind in business and can be really hard to get "back in the game." I believe small business owners should keep the saying "always be learning" into account for their entire work years.

Instant MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don’t Understand When They’re the Problem
We just read two articles about change and moving forward after failure. Without change a business or a personal life will become stagnant and die. Unfortunately, many small business people cannot see this. They are stuck in business mode (another early article) and cannot allow creativity to thrive. If a business owner or manager does not make necessary changes they will fail, period. Too many people have an “it’s my business and it’s my way or no way” attitude. I wonder if that is why they are self employed in the first place, knowing better than their former employers and their unwillingness to change. That is probably not true, but the self employed MUST be willing to find those who are successful in their line of business and seek advice.

Tabatha's article is much like an earlier one that focuses on the need for us to be able to accept change in our lives. In the business world, especially for small business owners, it is really important to be able to adjust and adapt to the wants and needs of the consumer. The inability to do so may be the reason why so many small business owners don't succeed in their ventures. In my field, I know that every year will bring me a new set of students, and quite possibly, a new set of standards that I'll have to measure up to. If I'm to succeed as a teacher, I know that I'll have to adapt and adjust to change. As they say, change is the one thing in life that's certain.

Instant MBA: Reality TV Stars Says Small Business Owners Don’t Understand When They’re The Problem The article points out a good point that might be hard for small business owners to understand. Small business owner’s work very hard to grow their business from the bottom up. Sometimes owners don’t want to admit that their methods aren’t working anymore. When someone from outside the business comes to try fix things owners are reluctant and don’t want others telling them what to do. Owners are typically stuck in their ways and don’t want to change, but change is evitable. As society changes business have to change with different styles.

As a small business owner, or any business owner, it is important to be able to realize when something is not working for you. You need to be able to separate your ego and pride and be able to take some constructive criticism. If your business venture is not going well and you can not do this you may be doomed. If people are willing to give you ideas or anything to contribute to making your business work better you should try to be receptive. After all they are willing to help you succeed it's always worth looking into.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When
Small businesses operate in the same way for years and years. They follow the same method even though it appears that something is not working and its high time for them to change. For some reason, they are consumed with pride and hardly change. It is very important for them to have an open mind and be willing to mold themselves with changing time.

Instant MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don’t Understand When They’re the Problem
Part of being a good leader is being open to suggestions and constructive criticism as well. You don't ever want to get so caught up in your position that it can lead to detrimental results for your business. When you see that something is not working in your business and you have tried everything in the book, then it's time to look at yourself and see if there is something you can be doing differently within your business.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When They're The Problem
This article is similar to a previous article about change. To run a successful business, managers must always be ready for change. The business environment today is so volatile. What works one day make not work the next, and a manager must be able to change what is necessary to adapt to the shifts in the business environment. Some times it may require changing a policy or system, but other times it may require the manager to change how he or she operates in the business. This will be necessary, but probably the most difficult because few people will want to admit that they are problem. As a manager, you must be able to take constructive criticism and use that feedback to adjust your practices, or the business may suffer.

INSTANT MBA: Reality TV Star Says Small Business Owners Don't Understand When They're The Problem
Small business owners do not understand when they are the problem, because they may be set in their own ways. In order to survive in the business world you have to listen to other people and not just yourself. Listening to other people can create new ideas and expand ones business. Business owners are set on their ideas and do not listen to others and this can hurt one's business because they do not know how to change. This could help one in the future to know that maybe you are the reason why your business is failing and to look at those aspects and correct them in order for your business to succeed.
